Volume problems

I don't know whether this is MuLab or my laptop's problem, but the notes don't seem to be at a consistent volume when using any VSTs. For example, I was using a drum sample in MuDrum and sometimes when I played it it would be so loud it distorted, and other times it would be too quiet. This has also happened with other non-mulab VSTs, such as Harmor (Image-Line). Does anyone know the cause for this?
