How to pass MIDI to slot #2?

I put a VSTi into slot #1 of a rack. Unfortunately this one has no envelope-volume-control.
No problem, I thought, and put a small MUX into slot #2 containing an amp and an envelope-generator. But this one (of course) needs MIDI-note-on to be triggered, which is not passed through the VSTi. Only if I turn off the instrument in slot #1 I receive the MIDI in slot #2 - but no audio of course.
I tried different things in modular-area, splitting, sending to another rack, adding an event-in to slot #2 ...
but found no solution.
Any idea?

I tried this also. But it seemed, that MuLab allowed me only to insert a VST-effect, not an instrument into the Plug-In-slot.
Now, after your post, I tried again and it really worked - but:
When I insert something into any rack-slot, the context menu offers
VST
-Effects
-Instruments
-browse
When I insert something into the plug-in-slot within the MUX-environment, it only offers
VST
-Effects
-browse
"Instruments" is missing and that's why I thought, that MUX does not accept instruments, but only effects ...
But with "browse" I could load the instrument, so this issue is solved.
Maybe this behavior can be corrected, so that the context-menu offers the same selection in all cases
