what free VST compatible progs are there for Windows 7? sorry, newbie to this stuff. I basically want to know what to fetch so that I can use Tweakbench VST instruments and Tweakbench VST effects. I repeat, free

Well, a good beginner friendly host would be LMMS: http://lmms.sourceforge.net/ . Not sure if a host is what you are looking for though, or if you just want to fiddle around with your VST's, then VSTHost (http://www.hermannseib.com/vsthost.htm) would be adequate.
