Heya pluggites,
I have made a quick demo with the sound of Octave Down.
There is the stems of a HilltopHoods song,
original and sent through the shifter.
Also a couple of bass guitar files.
They r played on my Gibson Standard les paul,
all artifacts are very obvious in the 'bass' files.
K-so it has problems,
but the basis is there,
I had fun playing the basses,
and it is much quicker than a bass guitar.
I want to get this better now,
as I can see myself playing lots of bass on it.
1 take is flawed,
I used my own recorder which had a bug,
but I like the take so it's there too--
it's marked so u know which one.
The good take is with my recorder too,
I have fixed it.

I'll be back to edit this post with SoundCloud links.

The file is big-55mb .rar

edit: I have made changes to the plug,
get it here->

Details of the change are on page 2 8D

Hi Nix. My understanding is that your plugin lets guitar players sound like bass players? My question is probably moronic but here goes... isn't the bass tuned 2 octaves lower than the guitar?

Post

G'day Harry,
The four-string bass—by far the most common—is usually tuned the same as the double bass,[5] which corresponds to pitches one octave lower than the four lower strings of a guitar (E, A, D, and G).
^ i searched Wikipedia.
It sounds quite bass guitar like,
except for the vibrato, which is caused by the index higher than 2000 on the mem read outputting 0, until a new cycle is started. ie. it has a mute every 2000 or so samples. I will work on this, coz I want to be able to enjoy my bass sound, without artifacts.
Many 7 letter words and triple words on ya!

Here is the ready to listen to version 8D

Artifacts are negligible on a mixed track,
but with the single instrument(it's electricguitar),
they are plain.

I can repitch 2 octaves Harry,
just need some time to organize a plug with parameters.
Also, it possible that resampling will be more flexible
than changing the speed of a counter,
need to do some more experiments.

Cheers

Nix, I had a feeling it was an ignoramus question. Ah so, you are a scrabble player too? Maybe we played each other at ISC? Hey, I love your Entrancer synth. I bet a really capable preset maker could create some really unique sounds out of it. In any case, best wishes to your DC12 plugin. :)

Wow. That's pretty convincing. I don't think I have come across such a plugin before. Going to try that with my cheapie guitar. I wish I have a Les Paul. :)

Post

Stoked you like Entrancer,
I want to make an original fx section on it,
instead of the cut and paste one it has now.
I should ask Rob Lee if I could get(hire) him to make presets.
Even 32 would be better than none.
I can compile as VST 2.4 now.

Thanks for wishing me luck,
I don't think I will do very well,
but it's nice to have an entry,
I had a creative burst just before entrants closing.

I don't play Scrabble online,
but around the board-
I am my mother's bane! hehe
(when I don't get all vowels)

Hope you like playing really quick bass lines
on the 6-string.

I will try and refine this badboy until it is a
smooth, thick one.

Hope to see ya 'round

Yeah, I love my Les Paul,
but think cheaper solutions are not inhibitive.
Mainly it just looks nice.
IMO my Samick sounds just as good.

Nix, to get that bass sound, do you record your guitar part and then import the recorded wave file into a DAW and then use your OctaveDown plugin to process it?

Is it doable to plug the guitar directly into the computer microphone jack and have the OctaveDown plugin process the guitar input live in a DAW? I tried it but the result I get is nowhere near as good as your audio example. What am I doing wrong?

Post

are you running 44100hz 16bit?
I may have made an error when using different sample rates.
Otherwise it should be the same.
I'll check the file.
I wonder what's up
edit-I checked it-all seems well.
What is the sound doing?
It should be fine to play guitar in realtime

Post

Nix, I use Reaper. I rendered a test wave file and according to MediaInfo it's 44.1kHz 24-bit. In realtime the audio is 1 octave down but it's all distorted.

Post

Thanks for testing and letting me know how it's going for you.
I just tried it here on my laptop.
It works as should, and as does on my desktop.
What is your audio buffer,
and you are of course using an ASIO driver?
Sounded very clean here on laptop,
but I am further away from my monitors.
Could you please send me a recording of how it sounds at your end Harry?
Cheers

Post

Hi Nix. It worked in MiniHost. Left channel only.

I'm still figuring out how to record live guitar in Reaper. The sound is being heard in the guitar track with the OctaveDown plugin doing it's thing (distorted) but after I record it, just the guitar is recorded and OctaveDown was ignored.

I'm starting to really like OctaveDown. I guess, if this problem with Reaper is not fixable then I can always just record live in MiniHost and import recorded files from it to Reaper. Thanks mate (as you say in your part of the world). :)

^Here is mono to stereo adapter fx.
The guitar signal is a mono one,
this will split it to stereo.

Thanks a bundle for taking the time to demonstrate.

I'll have another listen, sounds fine in minihost,
like u say.

Very much welcome Harry, I hope I can fix the vibrato to a degree.
I think I've got one stray sample at the start of each counter,
and the end has quite a hefty fade, as well as the mute.

Nix, I use ASIO4ALL v2 driver and ASIO Buffer Size = 512 Samples.

Thanks for the mono2stereo effect. Won't work in MiniHost because it can only load one plugin at a time. Tried it in VSTHost and the result is the same as the result in Reaper.

What is the setup at your own end? Seems easier to just duplicate that if possible. :help: :-o :)

Post

I use Orion.
http://www.synapse-audio.com/download.html
512 should be sufficient,
it's not buffer underruns,
doesn't sound like it.
It's possible there is nothing wrong with the Reaper file.
It's just not that hifi.
I couldn't really tell from the Reaper file if something is
wrong with the audio.
I will quickly knock up standalone,
so taking the host factor out of the equation.
Ta once more for having the patience to fix it as best possible.

I don't know if the ASIO4all is somehow related to the audio quality,
but probably not. Back in an hour with a standalone u can test.

The added standalone should not affect the voting peeps,
vote me in if you think the VSTfx alone is cool.
