I've tried Mr. Budde's HRTF3D many, many times on different systems and never gotten it to work, which sucks as I love everything by him I have... I will try once again, it seems!

SSpat sounds like an Accousmodules thing, did they make it for mulch?

Runagate, HRTF3D works for me no prob, it even remembers settings along with the project (at least in eXT). The couple of issues I've come across are:

a) The dummy gets detached easily from the actual internal settings (i.e. if you load a project with HRTF3D the settings are recovered fine but the dummy looks funny)

b) Sometimes there's a bit of crackling when moving the dummy around so it gets in the way when automating

Otherwise this one sounds better or more "realistic" to me than most of the other ones mentioned in this thread...

Oh and now that you mention acousmodules, his MultiToTwo plug looks like another nice alternative if only I could make it work, no matter what I do I can't get any sound through it:

Just out of curiosity, has anybody managed to make this thing work?
The mind boggles.

I imagine that, if there is one, it's an Accousmodules one. Check Gersic.com

Just saw this at rekkerd.org:

Perhaps waaaaaay overkill for the op's needs but someone might find it interesting.

Yeah I had to look twice when I saw it to be sure that it wasn't a joke... unfortunately the public beta expires in september and from then on the whole damn thing will be available for purchase... haven't been able to find an expected price quote but I'm assuming hundreds of dollars (maybe thousands?).
The mind boggles.

Wow, this seems extensive. And it's a 242mb download :)... could this be? Could my spatial sound positioning woes be over? Naaa I doubt it, but I hope so.

Yup. As I said, for HRTF to work really well, the filters should be modeled after the listener's own ears, it should be listened to with headphones and without moving your head: otherwise, the virtually positioned sound source would virtually move in sync with your head, as it is positioned relative to it. As your brain knows that the guitarist isn't supposed to run around the stage to follow your head's movements, your brain catches the trick and the illusion is lost.

So no miracle to be expected from regular 3D positioning algorithms...

Which, of course, is why I'm going to use it as much as possible until then 8)

Audeon: I highly doubt it's related to differences between people's heads/ears. The fact stays that a real binaural recording, done with mics positioned on anyone's head (big or small, it doesn't matter, it always retains the spatial feeling maybe not optimally, but very well) sounds great and captures the feeling of space far better than any of the available software simulators. Those use either the lowest quality methods (plain HRTF samples from the early 90s, or others) or more "innovative" things like QSound's old software, that still sound lousy. So it just comes down to quality algorithms.
I know you've worked on such projects, and maybe you know of some product that does offer quality 3d positioning, but that product would have to be not available to the public.

I'm still looking for a really good plugin for use with making sounds very spacial on speakers. With Binaural, you can create a perfect 3d environment (using mics in head replica) because the sounds travelling seperately to each ear (thats how we hear the real world anyways, 3d with just 2 listening points, our ears) but with speakers the sounds cross over and we hear both speakers with each ear.

Rolands RSS was pretty cool, would love to own one of those original hardware units they made, but looking for something similar in a plugin.

Any suggestions?
