Dear Asseca:

I've been looking for an *extremely* lightweight host and thus far found solace in VSThost and XT2.

While I've noticed that your software holds considerably more advance features, how does it compare in terms of sound/CPU usage to VSThost/SAVIhost?

I suspect VSThost will fare slightly better on a single CPU, multi-CPU support of VSThost is most probably much better than than asHost. The sound quality of all hosts *should* be the same ...

As noted before asHost is mainly coded for very quick access via the PC-keyboard, because I hate using a mouse when playing keyboards ...

Since I don't sell VSTHost, I am not obliged to spit out marketing babble, so here's my point of view...

VSTHost isn't really performance-optimized. There's practically no inline assembler code, no SSE stuff, or else in there. That makes it much easier to maintain, but costs a bit of performance (far below 1 percent on contemporary machines)... so it's easy to surpass it in terms of raw processing power. The real performance-hogs are the PlugIns, however, since realtime hosts such as VSTHost/SAVIHost don't add very much overhead. No host can make VST PlugIns go faster ("freeze track" left aside).

Sound quality... well, it always depends. Internally, all VST processing is done with floating-point data (either 32 or 64 bit), which assures high quality. Translating this to the sound card's target bit depth means that you can apply some sophisticated limiting and dithering algorithms that do their best to minimize digital artefacts... again, VSTHost / SAVIHost do nothing of the kind. It may be worth the additional CPU cycles in a high-quality studio setup, but you won't find VSTHost there anyway, hehe... Please also keep in mind that we're talking about practically unnoticeable differences here; if you got a 24-bit sound card, you won't be able to hear the difference (except for hard clipping - in this case, turn down the volume Cool), unless you desperately want to, since you payed dearly for the additional quality.

I personally use 'a Shost', but nobody on KvR would mind if you pronounce it differently ... HiHi

I have uploaded a test-version which hopefully fixes most problems with ASIO:
http://asseca.org/ashost/ashost-asiotest-3.zip

I would appreciate if all users would download this version, and tell me if there are any more problems with ASIO or MIDI Smile

I've downloaded the new version, but when I start the ashost.exe I get the message 1.2.1 has expired expire date 31.7.08

Maybe you've uploaded the wrong file ?
