Once again I'm charged with the task of finding something for a muso colleague with NO experience of creating music on a PC.

He wants a drum machine and is willing to pay, but I think it would be best for him to try out some free stuff and suss things out before deciding what he wants to commit to.

So, I think the idea of suggesting a host and Vsts is a long way off!

Ideas so far to introduce are hammerhead, leafdrums2, Tuareg2 and dLusion drumstation...... with my thoughts swinging towards leafdrums2 cos it seems foolproof ( and yet versatile .... and would be more so if reverb was an option in the fx menu. ) .... very straightforward!

How would any of you guys go about this task? Were talking about a digital prog virgin here, he's a fairly intelligent lad, but then so am I ....and I know fine well that it took me a lot of hair pulling, chin scratching and random key hitting on the way to gaining the knowledge I now enjoy!

Am I missing something? Is there a killer standalone drum machine out there which has eluded me, which may be all this guy will ever need, and yet will be so easy to use?

Did I mention that he's not a drummer? .... :help:

Hi,

ReBirthis an excellent tool for beginners and it's free. Once he gets the hang of it he can apply that knowledge to most any drum sequencer styled VSTi.

And the beat goes on...

Hey TattieMannie,
I plan to get back into graphics soon. Here is a simple drum sequencer standalone I built in SM. It has 14 drums built in to each of the 8 slots. You can load your own samples too. Any probs let me know. I'll take a screenie now. http://www.sendspace.com/file/iua4kj
+1 on ReBirth

there's one here that is pretty nice. Too bad it doesn't work as VSTi on my system.

You're very welcome.
Much thanks to exonerate for the sampler and oddson for the timing.
Let me know if you'd like to see anything in particular implemented. We have a drum synth groovebox in the works too.

+! for ReBirth, just be advised it doesn't run on Vista )on my machine at least)
Otherwise, HammerHead is ace or here's another option (former shareware)

Tu2 is also one of the coolest non-vst software out there, but again it crashes on Vista here and it is much more than a drum machine, so if your friend only wants a simple beatbox HH or LDB may be better options.
Oh, and how could I forget

To get Rebirth up on Vista use one of the songs as the executable. It bypasses the default opening of the help file. It should work hopefully.

Or if it really is the opening of a helpfile that is the problem, Microsoft made a vista-compliant helpversion available for backwards compatibility (I need it for my Delphi helpfiles, for example. Works perfectly and makes you wonder why they don't install it by default...)
