Midi to CV VST !!

to anyones who's interested, I've made a Midi to CV VST to run control voltage equiment from a computer soundcard. Anyone who's interested, have at- it's freeware and the SynthEdit workfiles are incuded for anyone who wants to modify it. It runs in SYnthEdit and also Cantabile vst host... not sure what else. have fun with it.

project created July 22, 2009.

You can't "control" the voltage, voltage is its own man, like the wind, or highly regulated mortgage rates.

I don't see how this is legal.

Wow ! You mean like Motu VOLTA ?
I can use your plugin to use my soundcard's output to control my Korg MS-20 ?
That is amazing : Thank you so much ! :)
(I'm off to bed right now, but i will try it tomorrow)

i think it is similar the Volta, except way less bells and whistles ... BE CAREFUL tho, I think it is wisest to use some sort of buffer ... keep in mind the vst puts out AC signal not DC volts, so you may need to add a simple germanium rectifier. I made this to use with junk computers hooked to circuit bent toys with CV inputs. Using it with your classic synth and brand new fancy pants computer wouldn't be my recommendation, but you could probably get away with it.

there is some quotes at http://www.ttyc.co.uk/index.php?topic=34060.0 that would maybe be helpful to you

ill take 2 of what hes on :)

sounds fun, any particular soundcards it doesnt work with?

honestly, I have no idea. I haven't actually hooked it into any CV equipment because I am still building mine. I suppose the important thing would be impedance matching... and I know little about that, so you'll have to look that info up, or measure your equipment somehow. I blew an old tape deck using it as a distortion pedal for guitar when I was 15... it worked for a couple months and then died. Impedance mismatch does that.

alot of people who do this sort of thing with MAX/msp seem to be using the MOTU products. I tend to use used sound cards from 1997.. like old soundblasters... you can get them for like 4 bucks a peice so if you blow a couple, not a big deal. another point to remember with this vst is that it is more for running filters or playing what many people consider to be "out of tune" as if there is such a thing.

:hihi:

believe me im on your side on this debate, im one of those if it sound right it is right. and if it sounds dirty its betterer :D

ill check it out, ill have to dig out a couple of the old soundcards :)

okay cool.. best of luck-

here's a pretty good page on measuring sound card impedance
http://www.winmls.com/Applications/Wiza ... glish.html

and here's an example filter spec

VCO Type: Integrator/Schmidt Trigger Tri-Square

Control Voltage Response: 1 volt per octave

CV Input Impedance: 100k ohms for 1 volt per octave

Frequency Range: 0.1 Hz to 57.7 KHz guaranteed, CV input
sweep = -15v to +15v

Power Consumption: +15v @ 31.1 ma, -15v @ 27.8 ma

** I dunno if the 100k for the CV input is a standard thing, I assume it is not but I've seen it on 3 different peices of equipment while looking this stuff up

someone sent me this helpful info

"the main thing with soundcards controlling analogue gear as you might know is that they have to be able to output DC, so most don't work very well since they have a capacitor before the output to prevent exactly that.
the main excpetion is the MOTU series which all pass DC unmolested. MOTU has released its own VSTi (VOLTA) to take advantage of this. the MK1 is cheap but only genereates about 2.5v the MK11 is better and makes about 4.5v which is enough for most vintage gear
some other soundcards work. I think there a thread on muffwiggler about it.
cheers

James"

also there is a pay plug that is closer to the volta in features but is for windows

savefile down!

apparently, they are doing some sort of upgrade... I guess message me for now if you need it. I don't have time to reupload it elsewhere at the moment, but anyone else who already has the file is welcome to, and welcome to post a new download link

savefile is still gone, and I cannot find this anywhere else? Is this still available somewhere? I'd like to try it out.
