All right, well thanks everyone for your help. Still can't get the desired volume level out of Logic, but maybe that's not a big deal anyway. Bottom line is it's probably just me doing something wrong. Besides, going back and reading my posts made me realize that I treated NOT LOUD ENOUGH as a serious problem that should be remedied - funny how I didn't even realize I had such a mindset until going back and reading over my words. Perhaps there is a recording angel out there trying to intervene, telling me that maybe I should stop contributing to the LOUDNESS WAR more than I already am.

Thanks for the replies, everybody.

well, another fwiw: with Cubase, until I learned to use a limiter, every track I ever exported seemed incredibly tiny sounding. That said, when imported back into the project, they *were* the same level as what I had, if only because I did_not_normalize to get rid of clipping as you report you did.

There is a maximizer for pretty cheap which is decent called Elephant, by Voxengo (which will solve your problem as far as a quick fix to get a little more punch out of, donno ... your mp3s for sharing, if the result is too quiet say for a laptop built-in speaker and all this).

Well, if it was only about that, there's also several useful channel strip and plugin presets coming with Logic. The multiband compressor and AD limiter really aren't all that bad IMO.
Still, Dan can't load insert FX on his stereo out (which is the most strange thing).
