So I'm trying to make the kick sound more prominent. If I leave it as is, it is drowned out by the the rest of the song. If I throw a limiter, compressor, or up the volume of the sample itself (even with EQ or filters) I get a popping sound whenever someone the stray really high freq's come in.
Is there a way to get rid of that, yet make the kick sound...worthy, if you will. The style I'm going for is more of progressive house/trance. |

You could try sidechaining/ducking. or possibly Eq everything around the kick.. i.e, cut the lo freq of other sounds to make more room for the kick. |

Sidechaining doesn't help, unfortunately.
Even when the kick is by itself, run through BP, HP, and LP filters. It's annoying since I haven't had this problem before. |

Try some tape saturation + maybe some exciter. There's enough freeware plugs to do the job, and that recently fixed the kick on a mix of mine. Hi-shelf roll-off the freqs above 8k and use a small peak around 7k to make the 'click' of the kick come through more prominently. Other than that, don't lowpass unless it sounds better, but use a small peak on 60hz to punch it out. Hope this helps. m@ |

Or alternatively, if your kick is sampled, why not download these amazing free samples from a new Samplecraze pack called 'Square Wave Drums - The Loudest Drums on Earth':
www.samplecraze.com/product.php/270/45/square-wave -drums/ The link to the free samples is at the bottom of the page, and they include some incredibly deep and powerful kick sounds, which should cut through any mix without you having to add any extra distortion The full pack contains 200 kick samples, 200 snare samples and 150 clap samples Martin |

I find it best to put all the channels on the mixer down to zero, then bring the channel with the kick to the desired level. Next start bringing up the rest of the channels one by one and work around the kick. Rather than every part of the song trying to fight for the same space you'll have more control over everything. It may take a couple of attempts too to get exactly what you want. Hope this helps... |

Thanks for the plethora of replies. I'll try all of these.
And what I mean by popping sounds is almost like when you put a vinyl on the turntable and you hear the pops. But they happen when the kick peaks. |
