Could be that he used reViSiT? http://www.nashnet.co.uk/english/revisit/default.asp

AFAIK it supports the ImpulseTracker Format.

Hello Caine,

This kind of song would no doubt be made by one of the trackers such as Impulse Tracker or ModPlug Tracker. It's possible to use Buzz as well. There seems to be a few effects put into the song as well....Modplug Tracker (limited effects mainly) and Buzz also have the ability for you to use VSTs with them (instruments and effects). You can do a lot with Buzz.

To build a library of the kinds of sounds that you hear in the above song, you would have to search through the net for Impulse Tracker, Scream Tracker and other old tracker tunes, load them up into ModPlug Tracker and save the bits of sounds (wav files and other samples) embedded in the song onto your harddrive. Or you can create your own sound samples using different waveforms and your favorite sound editor to mangle/shape them. Modplug Tracker and Buzz have loadable wave tables. Though Buzz is more modular and much more powerful....either of those 2 free software applications or a combination of both might be what you're looking for.

Hope that helps,
LL

Many samples used in old tracker song were either ripped (recycled :)) from other songs or sampled from classic 90's synths / sound modules such as emu, kawai, korg, yamaha, roland JV etc..

If you search for "tracker sample pack" you might find sites like these http://www.hornet.org/music/samples/ (don't know where the files are though)

another classic old school site was ftp.cdrom.com but I don't know what happaneded to that.. Gosh feels like 1996 again when I listen to those "spacesynth" songs 8)

Basically a tracker works like this: you create instruments out of a bunch of mono 8 or 16-bit )short) samples (with loop points). This instrument is then played using notes entered in a pattern. The patterns are then linked into a song.

Some special effects are there too: sample offset, pitch up/down, panning, filters (only some trackers!) and arpeggios. It's also easy to make volume sweeps and other choppy sounds.

For example: echoes were created by doubling the notes of a channel and playing them in lower volume a few steps later, sometimes even panned left/right for some extra stereo depth.

Renoise (www.renoise.com) is an example of a modern tracker

thanks a lot mates, i gotta first try to understand everything, so i use ableton and fruity loops and i know impulse tracker etc. from the past and a year ago but i didnt use them as i never really got into it ;).

as i got very good (for my hobbytaste) into ableton and fruity loops with vsts i thought perhaps there is a vst where i could play with my usb piano these old school sounds and the pianoroll, like quadrasid etc.

please check out this movie

the typical sound at 1:10 mins which starts (leadsynth) is very popular but where can i get this sound?
and also the light soft pads?
omnisphere, absynth, hypersonic, korg m1 is mostly too powerful soundin, so i thought about a soundpack somewhere or vst which includes the basic sounds :)

thanks for the help!

Hi Caine,

I think you would probably be interested in the kind of music created by the demogroup "Future Crew". They were one of the very best in their time. They still have their site up at ... http://www.purplemotion.net

I found a link to a pack of music modules and demos in the forum section....

http://cvdsoftware.sohosted.com/fc/fc.rar

Download it, unzip and check out their music modules in the "MUSIC" directory...I'm listening to one of my favorites right now "Starshine". :)

Anyhow, by accessing these modules with ModPlug Tracker or any other module compatible tracker you can get to the sound banks (wavetable) of those modules and save them to your harddrive.

Hope that helps!

Happy composing! :)
