Hi,
I am experimenting with MIDI out on the iPad using apps such as Midi Monitor.
I am quite a newbie on MAC, how can I get the MAC to respond to MIDI Out events from the iPad? Should I use a MIDI interface or whatever??? Do I need some kind of "driver" installed on the MAC?

You may a MIDI interface for your Mac depending on the approach you take and your software, but no, a special driver may not be necessary (all of of mine have always just been plug 'n play). You can set up your MIDI interface in OS X's Audio MIDI Setup.

I've sent MIDI from the iPad to the Mac using a hardware interface connected to the iPad via the Camera Connection kit (M-Audio devices... Uno works, so does my Fast Track Pro, but only if it's plugged into a powered hub). In that situation, the MIDI cable connected to my Mac via my MOTU 828 MkII.

If your Mac has built-in wifi, you may not actually need the interface. You can send MIDI over wifi. In the (recent) past, this required a specific (and free) MIDI server. Now, however, the iPad supports Core MIDI, so this may not be necessary. If you choose the wifi approach, be aware that you will want to set up a dedicated network for the job. A shared network could introduce unworkable, unpredictable behavior. latencies.

If you choose to use Core MIDI over wifi, you'll need to set up a "network" session in your Audio MIDI Setup. That session will then be available in your MIDI host's list of MIDI i/o.

(I hope this makes sense. I am suffering from a terrible cold, so my brain is a bit addled at the moment)

In that case, it's quite easy. You'll need some kind of hardware interface for the Mac. Then it's just a matter of setting it up in Auido MIDI Setup (and you may not need to do anything there actually) and the Interface will show up in your host software in the Mac.

I've tried just about every variation on getting MIDI from the iPad into the Mac... haven't run into any real head-scratchers. As I mentioned above, step-sequencing from the iPad (PolyStepARP) over a shared connection was too unpredictable but even then, it created a pretty cool groove... HiHi

A wired connection will be a snap (assuming your MIDI interface will work with the Camera Connection Kit)
