Awww, you know, I could, but I think I've already alienated a lot of people by just putting it up there in the first place. No. I think it is too unpleasant for some people. I was playing the song for a group and friends, and half of them got pissed off at that part- They really wondered why I would completely thrash a very melodic part. And then there's the whole "rip off" thing. So here I'm thrashing the thrashing of a great song. Hahaha. EDIT: This is my argument: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZTiMyoHyF9k Last edited by M Janet Mars on Sat May 28, 2011 10:33 pm; edited 1 time in total |

Hahaha. haha is right. you are a joke. that's the honest reaction you've gotten from me. the funny thing is you chose to pick kvr as a venue to post this garbage at... and none of these tech-nerds even know who guided by voices is. sure, you are much too clever for the genre. and tomorrow i'm plagiarizing lady gaga at the black flag forum for shits and giggles. |

[a video of... something] 'I'm sarcastic about my zeitgeist!' with all due respect, i don't think you understand the "genre"... you are welcome to your opinion (however ignorant it might be)... guided by voices is a great band and widely regarded as having made some of the best records of their time. i would suggest bee thousand or alien lanes. in fact, if you get through bee thousand and think the same, i'll give you my left nut. i'll feel that bad for you. |

what's to understand? that's just hilarious to me. that you have your panties so in a bunch you need to try and condescend to me, whom you do not know one thing about other than my contempt for *some stupid vacuous crap* makes it ever the more funny! respected by whom? for what exactly? not musicianship or creativity, obviously. This is really a great band? Why? Can you make an argument for why they're good without resorting to popular opinion or you read it in a magazine? Do you know what the fallacy argumentum ad populum is? |

The most maddening thing is that the acoustic version, stripped down by the production style, which was, I don't know, call it a rip-off or a homage to "Motor Away" by Guided by Voices, turns into a complete different song. Different chords, different notes, different ideas- Just a couple of lines in homage to the original song. I may be wrong, but I feel the song is a cover of style of Guided by Voices, like something Weird Al Yankovic would do (The Zappa tribute from example); Like something Secret Chiefs 3 would do (They ripped off beats from Alec Empire, complete songs from The Astronauts, and a complete album ripped off from Ennio Morricone); Like something the Residents would do; Like something Mr. Bungle would do (Sweet Charity, for example, is a kind of a ripoff of What the World Needs Now is Love by Burt Bacharach). What would have been more terrible- if I took all the original notes of the song and changed it to a style of whatever, or making a complete different song, and then realizing it would be fun if I made it in the style of Guided by Voices. If I wanted to really scam off people, I could have, you know, not called the song freaking "Guided by Voices"? And if I posted here is because 1) I want to share this song, 2) find nice people to do remixes for it, 3) just because. |

oh please, share away. my opinion is only my one. i see no value in your "version" or "parody" or whatever you call it. it was gross. maybe you'll find a way in the future to respectfully utilize these sorts of references, but this did not work for me. my point of view should be somewhat valuable since i'm one of the very few on kvr that knows where you are coming from. the guy that is defending you thinks gbv is a generic and un-creative band... come on. you know that's a bunch of shit from someone that has never even bothered to listen. here i was just drinkin' beer and enjoying the evening... and then this. you should be ashamed of yourself! |

here i was just drinkin' beer and enjoying the evening... and then this. you should be ashamed of yourself! You know, you're right. And you know, man, this is not like my only song in the universe, but whatever. I get what you say. Guided by Voices. It's unfair to say something like that- They are not generic or uncreative, for x's sake! They're a wonderful band. Okay. Yeah, you're right. It's a rip off. But then that what it says on the can. We could argue forever, but I think you don't really deserve something like that, hyperbole included. Sorry for ruining your evening. |

Sorry for ruining your evening. you didn't write this song. you must understand that. lift a riff or lyric, but you went too far. it's plagiarism. i understand that was not your intent, but that's how the song feels when i listen to it. perhaps you didn't think people would get the reference if you didn't go that far... i guess it depends on your audience. you could have vibed on that opening riff alone and i would have smiled. in fact, i think that is it. you should be more confident in your audience picking up on your references. that residents track you posted was cool... it didn't sound anything like mj. your track sounded like a bad version of the original. how could it sound otherwise? does anyone sound as good as gbv when doing gbv? impossible mission. you could take elements of motor away and be on your own path. |

I, myself, kind of found it pretty good as a riff on the whole Guided by Voices thing. I just saw it as another cover of a piece by this person...sheeesh.
Look, all kinds of people did parodies and the like of Rebecca Black's thing and we did not see people getting all bothered by that...there is even a Death Metal version of that Friday song. I think the intro to it could have outlined that it was a parody, yes. That way there might not have been this whole offended scenario going on.... ---- Barry The man who survived mustard gas and pepper spray is now a seasoned veteran http://www.ambientonline.org/ |

I saw it as copyright infringement strictly because it was passed off as original yet was an attempt at a carbon copy. As a songwriter I find that insulting. And then I had someone telling me it didn't matter because the original sucked so bad anyway. I thought that was weird and kinda crazy. I don't think plagiarism depends on whether someone likes a song or not. That being said, I was over the top with my distaste for the tune. I should have just laughed. |
