I think that Tony Williams has been the most innovative drummer. Just hear closely what he does in the Miles Davis Quintet during the sixties,

Tony Williams somehow managed to play way before and behind the beat while still keeping time. It always seems like it should all fall apart, but it doesn't. I listen to those recordings and try to understand how he did it, but it's just out of this world. It must have been both inspiring and scary to play with him.

Great choice.

Certainly Stewart copeland shaped my drumming style...
Dan Dan - the fast drumming man from Ned's Atomic Dustbin -- I studioed his style for YEARS and his drumming made me the drummer I am today.
The drummer for Dave Matthews band ROCKS, the drummer for Primus - sorry (don't know theur names off-hand)...
Manu Katche (probably spelled wrong) who drummed a LOT for peter gabriel.
Omar Hakim who drummed with Sting after the police...

Just my 2 cents...

oh - and also phil collins has some done some impressive drumming too - give a listen to the offbeat downbeat kick drum on the I CAN'T DANCE ALBUM track, "driving the last spike" - spent my whole high school days playing along with that epic track!

and YES - people said i was S**T when i tried to use that gimmick!!
hard to grasp for non-drummers i guess - cuz it ROCKS!

Always Tony's playing. I never heard him play behind the beat cuz he would speed up stuff a lot. He was a speed freak. I think you might be refering to some of the polyrhythmic fills he was doing which would sound like things are falling apart but it's was under control. He was really good at that.

Another awesome Jazz drummer: Jack Dejohnette I saw him live and he blew my head off. He's also a really good piano player.

Death! (Dark Angel as well, I believe?
Yes, marvellous drummer.. bloody fast, knows his stuff indeed

Marco Foddis

Wasn't he in Pestilence?
Very good drummer.

Frost...
And of course the mighty McBrain and Lombardo.

Solid as fecking rocks Thumbs Up!

I've seen them all live and Hoglan most definitely made the biggest impression.
Lombardo as well but maybe that was because of that almighty mosh pit I got sucked into for an hour Very Happy

Yep, Death, Dark Angel - but also Testament and Strapping Young Lad (and various D. Townsend delirii Very Happy )

As for Foddis, he has recorded the Pestilence albums up to "Spheres", where he has done some pretty weird, fusion-oriented rhythms. You seem to recall everything pretty closely by yourself, though Smile

I've seen Hoglan live two times with Death (Chuck is greatly missed...) and must agree he is a one-of-a-kind...very impressive. Precise, heavy-hitting, original: a genius.
