Thanks for the ears guys. I gave it a bit more work. I left the first one just below it

Hmm, not much better I'm afraid. If anything the mix seems to be pumping in a way it didn't before. Did you try to get the vocal more prominent with sidechaning/ducking or something like that?

The music is still overpowering, especially the piano and the strings seem to be fighting with each other and the vocals. It seems they're causing much of the pumping, I'd say just getting the levels down a bit would probably help. The drums sound good though.

What do you have on your master bus? If you have any compressor or limiter on there I'd start by removing that. Then try and get all your levels correct (in this case, I'd just drop most of the instruments 6dB as a start) before adding anything like that.

Just had a thought, what's you monitoring situation like? Headphones? Studio monitors? Are you listening loud/soft when mixing etc.

A thought no matter what is to try and vary your volume, ie. if you tend to mix with the music loud, turn it down and recheck everything, or the other way around.

You have some good ears there. Thank you

Do you mean keep every thing off the master, and keep it that way? Also, I'm using head phones. I have some vocal tracks that I what to complete today. I hope to get to This mix again on Thursday.
