I still prefer to mic up guitar amps and use hardware effects 95% of the time, and that is how I normally work, but for the other 5% when I use guitar amp simulators, effects etc, I reckon the ones that come with Logic 9 are the best ones I have tried yet. --> I agree with you rocksure I also tried this and also works for me ok ...

I dont know about Logic because I'm not a mac guy, but I use Samp and it has VANDAL which is a great virtual amp. I also have GTR3.5, GR4 and AT3...I wont upgrade GR or GTR, I'll hang on to AT but VANDAL just made it clear that my best solution is still a real amp. A couple of weeks ago my wife asked (not in a bad way) "how many amps do you need?" (I only have 4 tube amps now) and I said at least one more...ten years from now and a room for just my amps I'll answer the same way HiHi

I will be the first to admit that I cannot provide a solid foundation as to explain why, it's probably all in my head (or heads as it were HiHi ) and moving a year and half ago helped. I still live in an apartment but before my issue was keeping street noise out (I lived on the main route to a big hospital as well as a haven for harleys and loud stereos...my window was less than 15' from the road). Now I live in a country setting (reminds me of a tree house) and I bought the Jet City iso cab and I'm just happier.

Sims are great, VANDAL is great, you can do anything you want with them and I will be using them on most of my songs when mixing (but very subtle) but they just dont call out to me to play like the glow of the tubes and all them real knobs in front of me...40 years of playing and the last 18 months has been the best...I guess it's the nature of the beast Smile

Look, I know there are awful non-guitar VSTs out there, too, particularly the older ones, but I've tried plenty of the top brands for guitar. Either they sound like total mud or you have to tweak the daylights out of them to get anything reasonably realistic. Why is this?

I agree with the post about preferring to record real amps live -- and I can certainly understand why. For one thing, I don't care how many and what kind of cabinet sims you have; you will be hard put to simulate the close mic/distance mic/multiple mic'ing you can get with a live amp. In fact, I'd go as far as saying it would be impossible for some of you to emulate this setup. I can recreate it, but it takes nearly forever and ultimately a time waster.

I'll admit, though, I've been getting lazy lately. The VST plugs may all largely suck, but I'm getting great, very realistic sounds from the hardware amp modelers I started using about a year ago. Eleven Rack sounds fantastic, and I have a couple of Digitechs that sound great, too. Moving around a 5-lb. modeler as opposed to moving my 90-lb. Twins was part of what convinced me to try them.

I think I'm just plain done with guitar VST stuff, except for cute little CamelCrusher. Using the modelers, too, I can do processing external to the DAW on my PC, which saves more space in the CPU for other work. It's really nice when I can just send in the perfect signal to record on the DAW, adding any final touches at a later stage. I never worry about not being able to remove processing from the git's signal, 'cause I take the time to make sure it's perfectly what I want before I record.

maybe you dont know how to use them,i know people that can get very very good sound with amp sims.for example...

Now, as I was saying, I like CamelCrusher. That's a nice one and sounded pretty good right "out of the box." . . . and I've waded through the glut enough to find a couple of actual VST "amps" that do okay. Note that I said "some" in my post. I think the future of this niche lies in oversampling, to which I see many makers seem to be oblivious. Obviously, there's plenty of VST's that are made for other recording purposes that don't work very well and don't do what they are supposed to, either, yet there just seems to be a much higher percentage of garbage out there when it comes to guitar. The video you included really doesn't serve any purpose. I'm not sure what you intended that to prove. That someone else was able to get a decent sound out of one? I should hope so. Funny that we see almost none of the world's top players embracing them. If they were all that great the tonehounds would be all over them in a heartbeat. They're not -- at least not yet.

I can only guess that getting great sound for electric guitars in the VST world is much like the struggles hardware amp makers have. Certain amps -- e.g., Dumbles, old Marshall plexis -- are worth a small fortune while plenty of others are not.

really? This speaks of shear superficiality, first there are some very good sims that if I wanted to play games I could make blind tests all day and the only time you would be right is when you guessed. Second one does not have to go for the commercialism of vintage and boutique amps...like I said in another thread, one can do very well with some absolutely awesome tube amps and get 4 or even 5 great amps for the price of a used plexi (or a re-issue), a Dumble, a Badcat etc...I hate to tell you this dude but you can't buy everything, you might be able to buy a great sounding amp but you do not get ability to make it sound good to go with it...that's up to the player Shrug

Hi guys,
I guess this is the right place to mention that i just have uploaded an early beta of a guitar amp emulation vst effect, free to use as in 'free beer'.
I named it Dirty Chamber Amp, more on the hi-gain side of things Wink.
It has quite some latency, with a lightweight host and good interface it might be possible to use it live without any hassle, esp. at high sample rate, otherwise it is nice to play around for re-amping DI tracks.
