hmm, didn't like that much.

I played with Retrologue and HalionSonic. They sound pretty much the same. HalionSonic has an added osc but Retrolugue is much more direct, ease and quick.
I'd go always with it in spite of an osc less.

Not a good demo could be reflective of the sound of this synth or is it a bad choice of presets used.

My first vibe with the SB vst instruments is that they sound about 5 years too late. Saying that you must give SB some credit for no hype build ups and releases! So maybe there's no expectation to the synth and I'm unimpressed or given it time perhaps.

Very nice synth! I upgraded to Cubase 6.5 yesterday and was playing around with it.
It definitely has some character and the filter is quite impressive. The unison/multi in the oscillators didn't sound as I expected, I guess I should experiment with it a bit more...
Padshop is great too!

That's the one thing that has me interested in it. I've never seen an implementation like that before.

So... does this mean that a perfect emulation of a Minimoog would sound about 40 years too late?

I always hear people say {insert soft-synth} sounds x-amount of years old... or that it sounds "dated," like they can listen to any recording and pick out a synth and say, "yep, that sound was definitely made by a plugin that was made 8 years ago..." but what does that really mean?

Not trying to be mean, I'm just genuinely curious.

I took that comment to mean that Retrologue doesn't compare to softsynths being released today, such as DIVA and ImpOSCar 2. I actually agree with that (edit - based only on the examples I've heard here, I don't personally have Retrologue yet.).

What I don't agree with is that all Steinberg are 5 years too late. I often choose Halion Sonic over Omnisphere and the demos of PadShop sound better to me than what I normally get out of Atmosphere.

I've got Halion 4 sampler, and the built in VA synthesizer seems extremely good sounding to me(just not sure about how to get at it without choosing a preset that uses it, got the SWA video to watch for that), someone mentioned it's probably the same engine as Retrologue.

I read that too. I wonder if someone who happens to have both Retrologue and Halion 4 could make a patch using identical settings (with Retrologue being the lowest common denominator) and post it for an A/B listen test.

Cool! My comment was only based on the sound examples posted here, not real use. It was irresponsible of me to not say that earlier and I apologize.

There's a "snag" in copying exactly.. There's some non-editable defaults on certain settings in Retrologue which you have to match on HALion without being sure what they've chosen. Then you need to copy the envelope settings. You have huge flexibility in HALion 4 where Retrologue assumes some default curves and then applies ADSR controls to that.

I did a "quicky" match of the Retrologue preset "Dark Fifth" in HALion 4 anyway. 90% of what I did was typing in the same settings where I could. Then it was a case of adjusting the envelopes by ear. You could spend more time to get it 100%, but the following back and forth should be close enough to show it's the same engine..

The HALion 4/Retrologue VA engine is very flexible and capable, but it has a somewhat polite/clean "I am a VA" sound by default.

Do you think that Diva or Imposcar2 are "less VA" than Retrologue?

Without commenting directly on Retrologue (since I don't have it yet), I'll say that DIVA not only sounds analog, it sounds more like the really sought after analogs than cheaper real analogs do. Similarly, ImpOSCar is just a great sounding synth by any measure.

The resonance is well behaved at max. cutoff because there are no harmonics there The oscillators roll off quite sharply near the top of the spectrum.

Also, an even better 6db resonant filter is to be found in TAL-Noisemaker. That one can be overdriven
