i searched the forums (and Google) but all the threads seemed to discuss docks and interfaces. I have an interface but wondering what type of cords I need to use to get sound out of my ipad/iphone and into the interface (can use XLR or a guitar cable into the interface). some apps don't have export or won't work with audio copy.

i am also wondering if I will end up with mono if i use the xlr or 1/4 cable. seems like that is inevitable.

Ideally you'd want a stereo mini plug (like what's on the end of your earbuds) to 2 X 1/4" mono phono plugs. But I doubt anyone sells a cable like that.

You may have to go with a stereo mini plug to 2 X RCA male plugs. Then get 2 X RCA female to 1/4" mono male phono plug adapters.

Either way, you retain stereo output.

I bought my Presonus Audiobox USB for $100 a while ago. Right now it seems to be about $150 everywhere.

Couple that with a powered usb hub (< $15), a camera connection kit ($30) and whatever wires you need (XLR, quarter inch), a mic if you want to sing, a midi keyboard if you want to play keyboard and that's about it.

You can, of course, simply use a eighth inch to quarter inch cable and plug directly into the iDevice's headphone jack, but that's pretty low end and noisy. In which case, you simply pay for the cable and whatever you are plugging the quarter inch into.

What interface do you have? It's possible that all you need is a camera connection kit which will get you a usb input into the dock port.

Thanks everyone. I have a presonus firebox that is my main interface and I also have one of those line 6 interfaces that came with gearbox/podfarm ( I think it's the DI Silver).

Not really interested in getting together a recording setup for the iPad as I have Logic; but just want to be able to get audio out into my computer. Most of the apps that I want to get audio from are basically toys and generators, stuff like bloom and mad pad, etc.. All of the more pro apps usually have a way to export. Sometimes you just want to keep the strange little sounds you create spur of the moment. Even if I only get mono it's fine as its basically lo-fi sounds I want to capture.

Try one of these for US$5: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00499DZJG/ref=oh_o00_s00_i 00_details. It takes audio line out from your dock connector and turns it into 1/8" stereo, for a cleaner signal than your headphone output.

Note that the cable from Amazon linked above won't work on the iPad 2. I believe the iPad 2 and iPhone 4 did away with the audio out pins on the dock port.

If you have the 2, you need to take audio out of the headphone jack or use a class compliant USB interface with the camera connection kit.

I just retested this. The Amazon cable works fine on my iPad 2 and iPod Touch 4G. The only drawback that I know of: the iPad's internal volume control is for the built-in amplifier. Since you are bypassing that with this cable, you have to control volume on the device you are plugging into.
