Latest News: MuTools updates MuLab and MUX VST to 5.1.5

I once downloaded it, but still do not understand how it works.
I wanted to hear just one instrument ( a trumpet) but always seem to get another instrument added. Could somebody explain how to eliminate the unwanted instrument - or layer? I just need a good free Trumpet VST and not a mix with saxophones or other horns. Thanks in advance, Rob |

Hi Rob,
at the moment I'm working with "DSK Brass". There are two separate instrument units in it (left/right), which can afaik be triggered only together. There is no midi channel assigning as with "DSK Overture". As a workaround you can turn down the volume "level" of the second instrument. That's what I do. I use the "piccolo trumpet", which has a usable trombone sound in lowers keys. Sounds like in the 70s. BTW: Do you know the function of the "Retrigger" switch? What does it do and how can it be used? |

Hi Reincke, I wish I could inform you on the Retrigger, but I have no idea what it is nor what it does.
The information of DSK is minimal as far as the use of this VST is concerned. Your tip of setting the volume of one of the two instrument to a very low level is exactly what I was looking for. One problem is: I could not find a Volume slider or button. Is it called differently?. I even looked for Velocity, but that also was absent.Could you tell me where to look for it? Thanks in advance, Rob |

Hi Rob,
try the slider called "level" beside the "spread" slider. It's on the right side of both instrument units. Hope this helps. Hey, what kind of music are you doing with brass? |

Thanks for the information, Reincke.
I am working on a translation of some orchestra pieces of the Dizzy Gillespie Big Band from 1948. I want to translate them to a quintet setting with piano, bass, drums, saxophone and trumpet. I was desperately looking for a trumpet. I have one on Hypersonic, but as I do not have Cubase it is a problem to select it again and again each time I open the session as Mulab can not remember wich instrument in Hypersonic I chose! Rob |

There is a muted trumpet (made by me)available at Mu.Lab downloads section:
http://www.mutools.com/library/musynth/Muted%20Trumpet%20Pac k.zip It works with Mu.Lab's default multisampler, so, no external VST needed, less CPU consumption. Also, for jazzy stuff, I strongly recommend as freebies Kontakt free player with the trumpet from factory selection, and DSK SaxophoneZ and DVS Saxophone as free saxophone VSTi. Used together can sound pretty realistic. |

Hi, Sorohanro.
I already have your muted trumpet and am very fond of it. As for a natural trumpet, I saw the name Kontakt a couple of times, but did not know what it was and what to do with it. Do you have to install it in Mulab? The saxophones you mentioned I have them too and use them very much. EDIT: I downloaded Kontakt 5 Player.zip Kontakt Factory selection. exe and Kontakt Factory selection.iso. The question is: What should I do now? Rob |

Rob .Ok, it seems that you just started with music making and computers.
Here we go: Kontakt Player is a VST instrument, more specific, a sampler. To install it, unzip Kontakt 5 Player.zip About zip format - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ZIP_file_format What to use to unzip - http://www.winzip.com/downwz.htm or http://www.7-zip.org/ You will get a installer for Kontakt, double click installer, follow the on screen menu. Install also Service Center and use the serial number you got in your e-mail from Native Instruments when you downloaded it. After installing Kontakt Player, double click on the Kontakt Factory selection. exe and follow on screen menu. After everything is installed, open Mu.Lab and open the Kontakt Player as a plugin (you either browse from Rack - VST - Browse For VST Plugin or just drop Kontakt.dll to a rack), Service Center will start and you have to authorize the plugin with the serial you got in your e-mail. Then Kontakt will ask you to let it add the library, let it. Write music & profit. |

Hi, As an architect I am used to work with computers, working with Autocad, Sketchup, Photoshop and other applications, but you are right, I am new to music software.
I have been playing piano for almost 70 years but bought my fist keyboard 3 months ago. I installed the Kontakt Player, hihghlighting VST plug-in as the type I wanted but in the end got Kontakt5 Player.exe in stead of DLL. But never mind, the worst is still to come. I started running Factory Selections.exe and got a message from Windows that something was not complient with Windows XP Professional regarding iso images, and that my system would run a greaty risk of becoming instable. I was strongly advised to stop the installation. Which is what I did, not wanting an instable system. So I am back at where I started.. Rob |

Hoi Rob,
I want to translate them to a quintet setting with piano, bass, drums, saxophone and trumpet. any proceedings in the Gillespie piece? Have you found an appropriate brass instrument? I'm too interested in realistic sounding (brass) instruments. "DSK Brass" is the best I found until now, despite the "Muted Trumpet". What drum set are you using? All theese questions ... Reincke. |

Hi Reincke, I finished the piece called "Manteca" from 1948, but used only a piano and tenor sax, because I was not happy with the DSK trumpet.
It sounded too synth like for me. As a drum kit I used a Brushes Set of loops I bought at Natural Instruments. The final result swings like hell, but is totally different from Dizzy's interpretation. I am still looking for a good trumpet. I even found one but it is part of a boxed edition and a bit too expensive for my liking. I have an acceptable trumpet on my VST Hypersonic, but it is so frustrating I have to reselect it each time I open the session in Mulab. That is why I wanted a separate trumpet VST. Such a pity DVS does not have a trumpet, because their tenor sax is marvelous. Thanks for your interest. Rob |

Yes, the "trumpet" doesn't sound realistic. I'm just working on a piece with trumpet and trombone, and for both of it I took the "piccolo trumpet" from the DSK Brass VST, which I use in mid keys for the trumpet and in lower keys as a trombone, with lots of pitch bends. For me much better than "trumpet". Have you tried that?

Hi Reincke.
No, I did not try the piccolo trumpet, but I will see if that works for me. As Manteca is concerned, I could mail it to you. Do not expect miracles, as I just bought my first keyboard a few months ago and use Mulab even shorter. You could mail me at figeegraphics@tiscalimail.nl I will attach it to the reply. EDIT: I tried the trombone and preferred that one, but the attack is a bit slow. I will try to tweak it a little. Nothing sounds like real instruments, especially if brass, small mouthpiece and high register, because with every sound the attack properties change and difference between legato, staccato and tenuto can not be emulated by a sampled instrument, not yet.
So, here's my thoughts: 1 - try to get Kontakt Player working. It's a good instrument. Maybe was something wrong with the download, try again and ask for help on specific forum here on KVR http://www.kvraudio.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=1, maybe they can help you more than me. 2 - I'm a trumpet player, if you finish the piece and you're satisfied with the orchestration, I can try to record some real trumpets in my fee time |
