Wrapping a VST3 plugin in a VST2.4 Host?

Hi all,

Here's the dillema...

I want to purchase Steinberg Padshop which is only VST3, but my host (Brainspawn Forte), currently only supports VST 2.4

I know that there is currently no VST3 to VST 2.4 wrapper, and changing hosts just for one single VST is not an option.

So is there any other way I can do this or does anyone have any suggestions for a workaround?

Thanks,

Ben H
My main tools: Kontakt, Omnisphere, Samplemodeling + Audio Modeling. Akai VIP = godsend. Tari's libraries also rock.

The only host-which-can-be-a-plugin which I can think of which supports VST3 is FL.

Thank you for the suggestion whyterabbyt. I shall try that and see how Forte copes. Hopefully stability is not affected too much from doing this.

I'm also still open to any other suggestions that people may have too. ;)

And I think it could be used as a plugin in another host via some app, but I cannot access Hermann Seib's site right now, I hope you have better luck:

Edit:

It seems to be down for everyone.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I don't think VSTHost or SAVIHost can be used as a VST inside another host. It would be great if they could though. :/

Unfortunately the website is still down atm, so I can't actually confirm this.

I don't know if the current version can be used as a vst, but some years ago it definitely could. See the caché version of Hermann's page:

Fuckin' webserver decided to die, as it does quite frequently... it's up again.

Correct. Or rather, only by using it as a "slaved program", but not directly.

That would require a lot of work, especially since I can already hear the Apple fans requesting an equivalent... does anybody think that a Kickstarter project might make sense?

Mmmm ... I misunderstood the concept behind Legree, I was a newbie when I tried it. I hope it fits the OP's needs, anyway.

arakula,

So if I ran VSTHost in slave mode, it would basically allow it to receive MIDI from my Host and basically pipe the resulting audio back into my host?

I'm having trouble trying to understand exactly what it would do. :/

Exactly. It can send and receive audio and MIDI to/from the main host through a little PlugIn, but stays a separate program.

Ok that seems like a roundabout way to do it, but it just might work. :)

I'll give it a try and see how I get on.

EDIT: I'm confused already

I think Legree is a wrapper for VSTHost?

So the signal chain would look like this:
Brainspawn Forte sends MIDI to Legree VSTi
Legree VSTi echos the MIDI to VSTHost /slave
VSTHost /slave is hosting my VST3

VST3 outputs audio to VSTHost /slave
VSTHost /slave echos audio to Legree VSTi
Legree VSTi echos audio to Forte

Is that correct?

Wrong! You'll find a vst3shell.dll and vsti3shell.dll in there:

http://www.xlutop.com/buzz/zip/beta/pvst_v1.1.10b22.zip

And you might want to get shell2vst archive as well to make individual wrappers by dragging the above dlls onto the shell2vst executable:

http://www.xlutop.com/buzz/zip/shell2vst.zip

;)

Yes.
Tried that... and Forte gave me a "VST module ignored because it does not have a built-in editor" error.

Apparently some hosts provide this... Forte doesn't. :(

Next step... gonna try the xlutop tools. :-/
