One could say much the same for NI. Their licensing costs are prohibitively expensive for the smaller developer.

Do they charge per title or is it simply a flat fee for the right to make Kontakt libraries.

Per title AIUI

What makes you think that will happen? Kontakt is an extremely important product for NI.

I'm not saying it will happen, but that it could.
Just ask anyone who ever bought from Kjaerhus Audio.

Anyway, that's just where I draw the line. Especially if a lot of expensive 3rd party products are dependant.

As is the case with just about any software you buy that is not tied to a dongle. Shrug

You mustn't buy a lot of software if that is the case. Shrug

Sure I do. And only my Korg Legacy Collection and Halion Sonic uses a dongle.
And that dongle will still work if Korg and Steinberg's servers are down.
At least *I* have control over it.

The only sound libraries I buy are the Alchemy ones = DRM free.

What about all your other C/R software that you own then?

Anyway I know I feel a lot safer dealing with C/R and the minimal risk of a major software vendor going under, than I would about losing a USB dongle with all my authorizations on it, like I consistantly manage to do with all my USB sticks.

One more consideration for you: DRM free DOES NOT equal safe. Just look at Gigastudio.

If NI create an Ebola variant which kills everyon who doesnt use Kontakt, then things will be worse.
I'm not saying it will happen, but that it could.

I don't own any C/R software.
I have: Alchemy, Vaz+, FL Studio & a lot of Image Line plugins, Fabfilter Twin 1/2/Volcano 1/2/Timeless 1/2, 4x Ohmforce, AudioDamage, D16, Linplug, ... and much more...
All of them use no C/R or dongles.

And I don't lose USB sticks Wink

Has this ever happened before? Because my example has, more than once.

What, one of the largest audio software development companies in the world folding suddenly?

Derailment split, or part of it anyway. Back to discussing Kontakt as a "standard" sample player, please, not trying to come up with absurd worst-case scenarios.

A quick look in the KVR news section, and there are still some non-Kontakt or Kontakt + others goodies floating around, like this for Live:
http://www.kvraudio.com/product/passion-bass-by-the-control- centre

It will be interesting to see what the BitWig guys come up with for sampling - it looks like they are geared towards being a complete solution (especially with the Max-for-Live-like extensibility), so my guess is something full-featured, but there being no open standard for sample-based instruments, I wonder what route they will take.

I'll probably bite the bullet and purchase Kontakt - I own other NI products and have no concerns about the quality, etc. But it's another investment in a proprietary product.

In that case, could sample developers pool their libraries to create big Kontakt Player products.
