I've been looking for good tape sims for a while but not really for the compression/overdrive they always seem to have, more for the wow & flutter effect.
I recently tried toneboosters reelbus which has an absolutely lovely wow & flutter so I think I'll get that for sure. It has a couple of nice vintage models with some different sounding wow & flutter, namely the old rusty one (or whatever it's called) and the 3.75' 75 model. Instant boards of canada sound. I wish you could change settings of wow & flutter though. The only thing I have against these is that you can't change the speed of warbles and it seems like a bit of a constant loop. could use a little more variation. I also tried magnetic II and it's wow & flutter is ok, but definitely not as good as Reelbus. Also can't change the speed. Are there any other wow&flutter effects out there? I'd like to have a little more variety from the Reelbus effect. thanks ---- This is a block of text that can be added to posts you make. There is a 255 character limit. I really wish there would be more of this kind of effects!
Many people seem to want them but there are just a few out there. There is this old SynthEdit VST which quick OK-ish. Another option is Unstable by De La Mancha (Also SynthEdit). I haven't tried it but De La Mancha plugins are usually really good. My favorite one is Tone Projects Sonitex STX-1260! It's a SynthEdit plugin again but it's really quite nice and can add a lot of other LoFi effects lie bit reduction, noise etc. It sounds really nice when the wow and flutter gets modulated by the envelope follower! Cheers Dennis ---- Back from the dead - Sorry if I didn't answer your mails/PM/whatever during the last few months. I hope everything will be back to normal soon. Life can take some shitty turns sometimes. |

Reelbus is excellent.
Fabfilter Saturn and PSP Mixsaturator both do some nice tape emulation and a whole lot more.Ferric TDS might be worth trying as well. ---- Anyone needing a Fabfilter friend 10% discount code? pm me for details. |

It sounds really nice when the wow and flutter gets modulated by the envelope follower! +1 Sonitex is a LOFI-er's dream DLM's plugs are also very good, I didn't bother getting Unstable, because I have that side of things covered, but his variations on the pitch-shifting theme allow you to do some really subtle or creative things with pitch modulations and warbles. (Check out Octav8er and Pitchfork) |

If there's one thing that Ferric DOESN'T do, EXPLICITLY, it's W&F. You might as well offer him a delay, chorus, flanger, reverb, or any other effect that comes to your mind |

I don't see wow & flutter on any of those plug-ins at all. I should also mention that I am specifically looking for mac versions. ---- This is a block of text that can be added to posts you make. Boards of Canada does it a lot, but I also call it the Ween sound/effect, as that was practically their sound on their early albums which were made entirely on cheap Mackie/Tascam/Fostex 4 track cassette recorders. They still make use of the cheap 4 tracks on current releases, just for the "tape speed" pitch knob effect, which they say can't be really authentically replicated any other way. Those machines can probably be found pretty cheap in used condition now a days.

Another one would be VTape Saturator (and a few other VST's they offer have Hiss, Flutter, and Bias options)- it has Hiss, Flutter and Bias which give a pretty good feel. I really like WOW & Flutter though, it does a good job with even the over-the-top types of W&F |

while it's not a "wow & flutter" effect, i am really enjoying xils-lab chor'x plugin, and its emulation of the HAAS effect (or is it the doppler effect?)... to me the video below sounds very "boards of canada'ish"
