Hi

I'm really wanting to buy Alchemy, and being that I just got my Student ID Card last week, I want to apply to an educational version.

However, I want to know if there's any limitations with this type of license. For example, NI educational licenses cannot apply to an upgrade discount, etc.

So, what are the limitations of the educational license of Alchemy?

Thank you

There aren't any restrictions listed in the FAQ. However, I'd imagine that an educational license is NFR.

By the way, that's the only restriction on NI's educational licenses; that they're NFR. You do qualify for upgrade prices with them.

Yeah, I suspected so. Do you know anything about the updates/upgrades?

From the FAQ

Quote:

Will there be an educational discount for Alchemy?
Yes. Our educational pricing will apply to new copies of Alchemy. However, it will not apply to crossgrades. Universities and students can buy Alchemy at the discounted price of $125. When Alchemy is released, please write to support with your student ID or some form of student identification per the Educational Discount policy. In addition to the 50% discount, we also allow educational users to use it simultaneously on 3 machines, for every two licenses they purchase. So for the cost of 2 full price licenses, you can run 6 educational licenses.

Note: Soundbanks do not qualify for educational discount. The only products for the discount are CamelSpace, CamelPhat, Cameleon and Alchemy.

The only limitations is that for example, you can't buy Cameleon, then crossgrade to Alchemy with it. Other then that...it's as if you bought them regular from the shop, so they do not become NFR. I hope this clarified things.

What about commercial use of the Educational license? Many software companies do not allow commercial use on an Educ. license.

If you can prove you are a student, you can use the synth in anyway you want as if you bought it from the shop. Its just a discount code.

Very generous terms from Camel Audio! Smile

Some software figures that Educational License = Non-Commercial or Educational use only.

For CA to have open terms is most generous. He could work his way through school playing Alchemy! Smile

Is commercial use still valid?

Current wording of the license seems to contradict this statement.

Hi,

I think our licensing agreement has been updated since this thread was first started, but here is the long answer to your question ...

Like many other software products, technically our EDU license is for non-commercial use as stated in the licensing terms you quoted. If you are a student it is unlikely you are selling music for profit. To put it another way if you are making money from your music then you can afford to purchase a full license for our software - and that is what we would prefer you do.

However, we don't know if you're using our software to make money or not, and it's not something we are going to chase you for ... so it's really a question of what you feel is the right thing to do for your circumstances.

Peace,
Andy.

Sounds reasonable. Just wanted to confirm if that's the case.

Seeing that you've got a flexible approach - I suppose there's an option to upgrade an EDU license to commercial later on, right? What's the situation with potential future product upgrades/crossgrades? The same treatment as with commercial?

Thanks.

We don't have an official means of upgrading the EDU license but you would be welcome to contact us, it should be no trouble to work something out.

Upgrading to a 2.0 release I'm not so sure about - it's simply too early to say but I would expect the price to be very reasonable for both full and EDU licensed users of v1.x, based on our current plans.

Peace,
Andy.
