But more in the spirit of the thread:
A musicologist would find significant points of comparison among Ives/Bowie, Stravisnky/Eno and Franke/Stevens |

Many thanks for the serious and not-so-serious suggestions everyone.
I very much like these dubious list threads, which are utterly subjective, because I always get to find out about some musicians who are new to me. |

Mudvayne Eminem I don't know, maybe different kinds of music, leads to different names. I like the angry po'ed kind of rock most though, and I felt they were cutting newer ground before. |

When I read this, I assumed by cutting edge that you were referring to artists who changed the face of music to a greater extent than other artists. If we look at it from that perspective, I would have to go with:
Elvis The Beatles Sex Pistols This is in my ever so humble opinion. ---- This space has been unintentionally left blank. |

Some that haven't been mentioned but I think should be, especially as far as pushing things forward sonically:
Miles Davis Lee "Scratch" Perry Kraftwerk |

This could actually be an interesting question, depending on what "cutting edge" means. I see (at least) two distinct directions:
1. Cutting edge = "out there," weird, strange, etc. 2. Cutting edge = style so different, either intrinsically or due to synthesis of musical styles, that they define a new direction for a generation of musicians, composers, and bands. My opinions: Type 1 - Agree with: The Residents --would add: Naked City Boredoms The Books Fred Frith/Skeleton Crew/Keep the Dog/etc. Type 2 - Agree with: Stravinsky The Beatles Eno THE Pink Floyd --would add: Ornette Coleman Thelonious Monk Edgar Varese Louis Armstrong Terry Riley King Crimson Les Paul Phish Fairport Convention/Richard Thompson Of course there are lots more in both categories. Personally, my favorite potential "cross-over" right now might be The Books. -u ---- "I guess one person can make a difference, but most of the time they probably shouldn't." -M. Simpson |
