in terms of being ahead of their time, Charles Ives was doing things that were unheard of for a LONG time.
Stravinsky did things in Le Sacre in 1913 that caused fights to break out during the premiere, rhythmically far far ahead of the time and a vocabulary that was quite novel in terms of sonority and a use of melody that wasn't usual. Varese was way ahead of the curve for his time, he made up his own principles, way out in front. this was done at a rock 'n roll venue which is also beyond cutting edge for the venue: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u4QqyuWQ7-s&feature=related |
