Though, I'd be lying if I said I didn't enjoy the first tone when I heard it. Darker with less ambience, for sure, but in the right mix I could see it working. Of course I might argue that with some tone fiddling on the amp and a bit of room ambiance from a good convolution reverb (I like Reflect) you might be able to get something as good. I wish Torpedo didn't use iLok so I could check out the full demo. ---- Zerocrossing Media http://www.zerocrossing.net 4th Law of Robotics: When turning evil, display a red indicator light. ~[ ●_● ]~ |

OK, just a quick little follow up based on some time with a few new toys...
First I tried Recabinet. I didn't like it much at all. Everything seemed to sound like it was under a blanket no matter what I did. I didn't see any increase in quality over just using Amplitube's cabs, in fact I think they sounded worse to me. Kind of static and lifeless. Then I tried the Free Torpedo. Very nice! Very limited, but not bad at all. I wish it had some room ambience on board, but as it is I'd have to use yet another plug to get that... too much. If I felt it was a huge improvement in some of the better sounding Amplitube 3.7 cabs maybe... but it seemed on par and less full featured. Then, for funz I checked out Overloud's TH1 v2. Pretty nice. I've always thought that was a good'n. I can't help but think it's UI is a mess though. So... I'm back where I started. Not a bad place to be. ---- Zerocrossing Media http://www.zerocrossing.net 4th Law of Robotics: When turning evil, display a red indicator light. ~[ ●_● ]~ |

Well... when I tried the Free version I didn't get it. I thought it was a joke, it just sounded bad. Then I tried the iLok full demo and it was a different world. Anyway.... Make sure to turn the VARIPHI knob, that's when the magic starts! Also try these Impulses, they are wonderful: http://cabs.kalthallen.de/ |

As I said before, I didn't like the ReCabinet ones myself.
Have a go at the GuitarHack (free), Burny Mesa (free) and the RedWirez (commercial) Impulses. Depends on what sort of guitar music you're into, but I found these to be the roughest and best for Rock or modern Metal. ---- TINY METAL IMPACT - UPDATE Mar 1st '13 - available for Kontakt 4.2+ I guess one could call lead poisoning an ironic death. |

Got one of the the two-notes audio engineering Torpedo Live rack units on the current shopping list Andrew, I was going to go for the newest pedal sized floor unit (Torpedo CAB) but it misses some of the features of the higher end VB101 and if I had the cash the VB202 unit. So the Live is the best value for money/feature set for me personally, I love the way it allows one to load in thier own Impulses of choice.
I've said it before and I'll say it again, In my very humble honest opinion a Kemper Profiling Amp (with a player's preference of profiled amplifiers of course) and a Two-Notes Torpedo VB-101 or VM-202 is where it is at from my point of view. Oh and I think the Kemper looks much better in this colour scheme:
It would not mean anyone that does buy one or something similar (if something similar comes along) would even make 'insert personal preferences here' of hardware, software and an endless mixture of both uneeded as you could profile your choice of any amplifier. Charlie Sheen wrote: WINNING!
Indeed Mr.Sheen, We could profile 'em all...Every last one chokehold, Really intresting to read/hear about going from ITB to out the box again works well for you, I am going to give that a whirl as I am always up for trying new/fresh approaches, Cheers for the spark Dean ---- Shit For Blood, Piss For Brains |

RedWirez still sound the more natural to me, they were probably captured in a room similar to the one I used to record into But yesterday I finally had the chance to play a little with Recabinet 3.1... it is a huge step forward when compared to 3.04 (which I used on a track I recorded as a session in january, BTW). I like it a lot. Again, I'm into Metal and high-gain tones. @chokehold: thanks for the BurnyMesa link, I didn't know about them. |
