Good news! HiHi

So I spent around two days comparing hardware and new technologies.
Would be sad to keep all this work to myself so I want to share it.
Almost lost interest for SSDs but then noticed there was a bigger price drop:

Crucial M4 SSD 128GB, 2.5", SATA 6Gb/s (CT128M4SSD2)
http://www.heise.de/preisvergleich/eu/626829
said to be very realiable, just a bit slower than Intel/Samsung
very positive 90% rating, active forum with fast firmware updates
100€ (just depending on daytimes)

Samsung SSD 830 Series 128GB, 2.5", SATA 6Gb/s (MZ-7PC128B)
http://www.heise.de/preisvergleich/eu/740867
faster than Crucial M4 but said to be less reliable (got no proof)
upgrade kit and cables included, good price if needed
100€

Detailed review: Crucial M4 vs. Samsung 830
(german, but charts tell a lot + you can use translator

Intel SSD 520 Series 120GB, 2.5", SATA 6Gb/s (SSDSC2CW120A310)
http://www.heise.de/preisvergleich/eu/724444
faster than Crucial M4 but said to be less reliable (also, got no proof)
though this one is expensive, pick this one if money isn't a matter
150€

OCZ Vertex Plus 120GB, 2.5", SATA II (3Gb/s) (OCZSSD2-1VTXPL120G)
http://www.heise.de/preisvergleich/eu/657210
have read a lot of bad words about OCZ reliability recently
you better double check the model if you plan to get one
90€

I came across this when configurating my new Notebook. Hope you can use this collection of information. Prices are for Germany, can't comment on other regions. Of course 256GB SSDs will be the double prize (Crucial M4 for 200€) and 60-80GB cost around 20-30€ less. I think 128GB is the best bet.
The next price drop will take some months, I guess end of the year.

So if you want to upgrade, good moment.
If you definitely need 256GB, better wait a half or full year. Razz

On your own risk. They aren't noticable cheaper and often use crap controllers. All your data could be lost when saving too much here.

and they equally often use exactly the same controllers as the 4 makers you mentioned. Given that Crucial, Kingston, Sandisk and Plextor constitute some of the other brands, it seems a bit disingenuous to mke assertions like that, particularly when there have been plenty of known issues with Intel, OCZ and Crucial etc:

M4 customers,

We are aware of an issue that is currently affecting a small number of users whereby their m4 causes their system to require a restart. This issue occurs after approximately 5,000 hours of actual "on time" use. Following the initial reboot, the system then requires subsequent restarts after each additional hour of use. However, the data on the SSD is unaffected and will not be lost due to this condition.

Through our investigation, we have determined the root cause of the problem and will be releasing a firmware update that rectifies the situation. We are currently running through our validation and compatibility process. Once this process is complete, the firmware will be made available to our customers. Although we understand the desire of some people to start using unreleased firmware now, we want to ensure that our solution works across multiple chipsets, systems, and operating systems before publishing the release code. We are currently targeting the week of January 16th, 2012 to publicly release the new firmware update.

We understand the impact that this is having on some users right now and apologize for this inconvenience. We appreciate your continued support, feedback, and patience as we finalize code and resolve this issue.

Google for issues with any SSD you're considering buying. Its an infant technology and all manufacturers have had problems.

I remember Scott (ADK) suggesting Mushkin and Corsair when I bought my SSD back in march 2011. Eventually bought a Corsair 120 for 180€ in Italy.
Had a terrible experience with faulty OCZ RAMs, I would not risk buying an SSD.

+1

Yep they all have issues, I was shocked when I read all these forum posts.
On the other hand, remember you see ALL comments but only those of the newest firmware really count. And like with every review, people without any failures most probably won't share their experiences.

I try my luck with the Crucial M4 and recent firmware updates.
Will have a daily sheduled backup and my vendor has nice return conditions, so this is really without any risk. If it breaks after the warranty period of 3 years that's ok, before I'd be disappointed.
