64bit VST for OSX?

Hey Sean,

I noticed that there's a 64bit VST version of UberMod for Mac (bought btw and loving it).

Are there plans for 64bit VSTs for VRoom and Shimmer too? (*fingers crossed*)

Cheers,

Alan

(Is FreqEcho due a 64bit VST enhancement too?)

Hi Alan,

There are plans. No schedule yet. Probably ValhallaRoom will get the 64-bit OSX VST treatment first, then Shimmer, as Shimmer requires a few modifications to keep it up to date with the recent Juce framework changes.

Thanks for the reply Sean.

That's great news... will look out for them in the future. Smile

Have a good one,

One more question regarding the 'at some point' Shimmer 64bit VST update...

Will it be getting the same browser system that Room n Mod have?

And also (sorry that's two Wink ) do you foresee the parameters being modified in this next version?

(I'm about to map out the parameters in Kore and save them... inspired by the drone post by you elsewhere here today and I just wanted to be reassured I won't need to remap in a month!)

Cheers,

Alan

I don't anticipate altering the Shimmer parameters. If I did, I would have to add new parameters to the end of the parameter list (as I am doing with the upcoming ValhallaÜberMod update), to avoid breaking projects that currently use Shimmer. My guess is that this would also keep things working in Kore.

I may need to do a simpler update to Shimmer, if Logic X forces my hand. I haven't seen Logic X yet, but I have a report from Apple that Shimmer has a bug in Final Cut Pro X. The fact that I haven't had a single customer complaint about this says something about how popular Final Cut Pro X is...but Logic X will be a different story, and if that bug is in Logic X, getting a Shimmer update out would be the highest priority. At that point, adding VST64 is simple.

Cool. Not that I think Shimmer needs any extra parameters or anything Smile

One thing I did notice when mapping Shimmer to Kore earlier on is that the Mode knobs all display values of 0-100 in Kore rather than the properties (such as Dark / Bright for the Color Mode parameters). I know that some plug-ins can give the parameter information like this and wondered if that was something that might be possible to add at some point? (to all the Valhalla plug-ins)

So Logic X is imminent by the sounds of things? (and hopefully Live 9 too!).

Take care Sean, thanks for the answers and the plugs Smile

Hey Sean,

I was wondering if there was any news on a 64bit VST update to Shimmer on the horizon seeing as Room and Uber now have 64bit versions?

Thanks! Smile

Hi Alan,

I was planning on doing a fairly chunky update to Shimmer, adding a preset menu similar to Room/ÜberMod, resizing, etc. However, it looks like Apple is making some changes for Mountain Lion, that will require me to totally change my workflow, and will also force me to no longer support PPC. So I might do a fairly simple update to Shimmer, that adds 64-bit OSX VST, fixes a few PPC issues, optimizes a few code things, and...well, that's about it. I'll look into starting it next week - I already have the workflow for the next week mapped out.

Hi Sean,

Thanks for the update.

So Shimmer will get a minor update (mainly for OSX 64bit VST) for the moment but the enhancements you mentioned (browser, resizable GUI etc) will happen in the future?

So unlike Apple to through a programming spanner in the works!

Cheers and have a good one!

Correct. The minor update *should* only take a few days, while adding presets and resizable GUI takes a lot more work. I will also create a proper installer for Shimmer with the minor update.

*sigh*

I'm not happy about this, as my latest blog post would suggest:

http://valhalladsp.wordpress.com/2012/05/11/apples-gatekeepe r-malware-protection-or-the-mark-of-the-beast/

I'm suspicious about how Gatekeeper will be used in the future, but I am more bothered by the fact that it requires XCode 4, which I have been able to avoid so far. My PPC customer base is pretty minor, but I was kinda proud that I created a code base that could automatically optimize for PPC and Intel processors. XCode 4 has no PPC targets, so any plugin that has the Developer ID will be unable to support 10.4 or PPC.

You can never really put anything past Apple.

The Gatekeeper thing sounds like a pain, I do dislike the whole pushing everything through the App Store angle, especially their 30% fee, which is not ideal for developers such as yourself, who offer a very fair price to users.

Maybe it's worth considering the road Chris took with his 64bit plugins by ditching PPC? Kudos to you for keeping it open and the dual format code either way.

Oddly enough I had given a passing thought to the Apple/Revelations connection previously!

Hi Sean,

Thought I'd bump this thread rather than start a new one.

I know you're busy tweaking VVV (just caved in and bought, despite owning more reverb plug-ins than is healthy Wink ) but was wondering if 64bit VST Shimmer is going to happen soon?

Would really love to be able to ditch the AU version soon and go all VST!

Cheers mate,

Alan

64-bit VST is one of those "after VeeThree" things, that keeps getting postponed while I track down a few very rare issues in VeeThree. The Shimmer code needs to be updated to build with the latest Juce framework, and this may take longer than I thought - I tried this with FreqEcho last week, and ran into some previously unknown compilation errors.

Thanks for the update Sean.

Sounds like one of those 'it'll take as long as it takes' scenarios with the Juce updates.

No worries, waiting patiently. Smile
