Well, it's an argument that I've used myself. It depends a lot on the genre in which you're working. Basically any electronic music genre that relies on hitting the audience over the head with over-compressed slabs of sound... yeah, in these cases, it doesn't matter whether it's Diva or Poizone or Saurus or Bontempi (if you wanna go hardware).

If you're doing prog, for example... or Berlin School, or acoustic-electronic hybrids, using mixes that let the instruments breathe... hell, yes, it matters. And you can hear the difference. Whether or not the audience cares about that... who cares? Do I really want to base my aesthetic/artistic decisions on what someone who's already lost his hearing in da clubs thinks?

That is a completely fair point, but you are off the mark when you say in a mix it won't matter... It might not matter for some backing synths, but if you are talking about a lead or a synth breakdown then it really can make more of a difference.

People just want the VSTi's to sound as good as possible, and if that's in comparison to the 'analog' version then it's completely reasonable imo. In this type of thread it's not really just VA, but VA emulation area - so even more reason it's a valid comprison.

Of course you can make really great sounding records with just the stuff free on CM magazine, or freebies you can download.

And of course time would be better spend making music that arguing the toss over which of the many VSTi VAs sound a bit better than the others (DIVA ftw, especially for vintage!!).

There is of course lots of stuff that sounds great on its own merits even if it doesn't compare well the the 'real' analog. And tons of other stuff from Msssive, Absynth through to Alchemy that you pretty much can;t do in hardware at all....

So... in this vintage VA case, it's valid to compare to Analog - the advantages of which can be clearly heard even in youtube videos. i.e. look up vidoes of a synthex and compared to the VSTi, or Aalto compared to a buchla - and you'll see there is still a pretty big way to go.

I was just trying the Firebird demo and noticed a very nice feature to hide the keyboard, and checked the Saurus demo for the same but can't fine one, am I missing something? If it isn't there now, this would be a nice feature in a future revision to have. BTW I'm really liking Firebird a lot

Yup, been a Firebird fan for ages! It's really versatile as it's also HCM (like Gladiator) powered... one can get some really lush sounds out of it if you know how!

Besides the sound, I really liked the compact GUI for Firebird, the ability to hide the KB, and the selection of skins. One strange thing about all the KBs on Tone2 synths though is they don't reflect the midi output like most other plugins, so the keyboards are not very useful (I use a utility to transpose and impose scales, so it is handy to have a keyboard on a synth for reference). Also Saurus' KB still has that weird grainy compressed JPG look to it. IMO it would look much nicer if they just removed the KB. The standalone has a KB that can be brought up which is more full-featured, if they could make that the one in the plugin it would be much better, no wasted space and a KB available if you need it.

I was 'this close' to buying Firebird (used) but Corona went on sale so i snapped that up, it also beat out Saurus for my personal tastes, was 'this close' to getting Saurus too. I was 'this close' to being a Tone2 customer

Minimonsta is getting a good little workout in the Ohmstudio beta BTW

I've played with the Saurus demo quite a bit... the mod matrix is too small and fiddly and 3 pages is ridiculous. I would much rather have an option to display all the mod matrix in one page where the KB is. A bit bigger and all at once.

Especially on the Mac version, the GUI still feels like it is in the beta process.

Yeah it is a little ironic since the first thing we were able to see was the GUI. the KB just looks bad, drags down all the other nicer GUI elements. I agree that it would have been better to save the space for the mod matrix. I could see the matrix spanning the whole bottom area where the KB is, and have a multi-column patch browser maybe integrated there as well. The KB just kills the looks though much freeware looks better, let alone the functionality that is compromised.

Gladiator is on sale in the market for 65 Euros.
