Tried to google this a bit, but it seems ReCycle still is the only product that can make REX/RX2

Please say it is not so, I really would dig a freeware programme that could do this Help

Or at least a programme more reasonably priced than $250!

I believe that it is still the only program that can do so. AFAIK, props does not license the technology to create REX files so any product with that capability would probably be the result of some reverse engineering.

To some extent I think that the choice has contributed to largely making REX files irrelevant.

If you are serious about developing libraries for Props then you just suck it up and buy recycle.

It doesn't have to be REX/RX2 files, but a programme that can chop up a loop like ReCycle.

Any tips?

There's a hole in the market for such a product, I think most of the time now the slicer is intergrated into a bigger environment (like LinPlug RMV for instance). For a simple slicer there's LiveSlice:

http://www.livelab.dk/liveslice.php

There was BeatCreator, but Zero-X is now out of business, which means the program isn't available anymore (+ it doesn't work very well in Windows 7, there's some anoying bugs).

There's also SliceX, which I think is the best modern slicer, it loads REX2 files as well as the usual suspect. I have it but rarely use it, for me it's unintuitive in the way it works.

For free there's Shorcircuit (by VemberAudio), I use it more than SliceX even if it's far from being better. I just prefer the interface & the way the GUI respond to mouse clicks & mouvements.

SampleScience pretty much covered it. Zero-X BeatCreator was able to output .rex but not .rx2 the main difference being that .rx2 is stereo

I dig Shortcirucit, didn't know it could also slice up loops, will investigate.

The interface is so simple but I realize it's a monster hidden behind it's lackluster look Smile

Yes! Search for loop slicing in the manual, it's very easy & logicaly laidout once you figure it out (very easy).

Happy slicing! Smile

Thanks for the tip! I realize that programme is now made available free, so even newbies like me who didn't own the product earlier, can simply add their e-mail address (don't even have to sign up for their newsletter) to get their free copy Smile But hope the demo mode wont kick in after 10 days....

Its great to know there are free progs out there that also can slice loops, not just ReCycle.

Depending on your needs, UVI Workstation can slice and map a loop, with different options, effects and multiple channels and outputs (cross-platform too)!

http://www.kvraudio.com/product/uvi-workstation-by-uvi

There's also Kontakt, if you already use it, but it's slicing/mapping kinda sucks.

Bloody Propellerhead and Rex - what are they thinking, keeping this format from everyone?? I can't believe how, in this day and age, beat-slicing software is so incredibly under-represented.

Poise drum machine can import WAV Loops and will map the first 16 hits across it's pads...if that's all you need.

Propellerhead seem to be sticking to their guns with recycles pricing, personally I think a fair price would be AT LEAST £100 for non reason users and maybe £80 or less for reason users...it's still a good useful tool but it isn't worth the asking price of 2012...it might be if it was integrated into reason with some kind of live clip tool such as ableton live
