---For a while it seemed like every time I turned on my computer there was a new synth or guitar emulation and of course I thought that the new iPad would harken a golden age of even newer and better synths but alas...
I would love to see this technology allow for transferring favorite sounds from app to app so the musician could make a personal favorites app to use live but maybe the limitations of the iPad with regards to memory, storage, etc...just won't allow that or maybe the app creators don't want their sounds comingling with other's sounds. I know you can run other apps in the background but that's really not what I'm talking about..oh well just running my mouth.... |

Guessing you don't spend much time keeping up with the news- Apple just announced inter app audio, and then there's audiobus, which may or may not exist by the time we get ios6. |

To me it's obvious we are going to see huge new steps on the audio side. Can't wait to see what the new apis will mean for us. ---- ʝλ√λʝ |

---Guessing that running a business keeps me from keeping up. LOL
I'm probably the only one who doesn't know what you wrote means...."inter-app audio"? I need to look that up I guess... Thanks for the replies... |

---Okay I looked it up and it sounds pretty cool buy fall is a long way away and having seen way too much vaporware over the eons that I've been a musician I'm not holding my breath. I really hope it happens though and appreciate the information.... |

Its down to Programming Libraries and Cost.
The Algorithms for most of the fx synth apps have been around for years, unfortunately the ipad is still a toy compared to vst. I dont think most musicians use the ipad anyway, its too awkward and fiddly to use in a live setup, most prefer hardware or reliable software option. After spending £400 on ipad and £100 on different apps, i have come to the conclusion it fails. I can get a fast core 2 duo laptop for less than £200 and Presonus Studio one Pro £200 , vst synths and fx are free and more advanced than the ipad. |

Scott, sorry if I sounded snarky, it's just the timing of your question was kind of funny given Apple's announcement the same day... |

---Not snarky at all and I honestly appreciated your answer. I've got $700.00 in the iPad and probably a couple of hundred in apps then there's the Midi Mobilizer 2 and now the Griffin Studioconnect. I could've bought a good used Motif for this amount and had better sounds...Argh!!!! |

---Before I come off as being too negative, there are apps that I really like and once the i0s6 thing comes out maybe it'll address some of my issues with making music on the iPad.
Without the iPad's Garageband I wouldn't have been able to do any guitar stuff (I can play Wakeman but nothing on a guitar.) and with the Fairlight app I get to do Trevor Horn's horn stab and I can sound like barking dogs. You just can't get any better than that!! Last edited by Scott Murrell on Wed Jun 13, 2012 9:25 am; edited 1 time in total |

But can you post on KVR from a Motif?
I have tons of fun apps, but don't do that much real "music making", whatever that means, on the iPad either. The main reason I don't is not any deficiency in the iPad or the apps I have, but just my lack of an audio and midi interface for it. Someday when I have an I/O Dock or similar and can better integrate it with my other gear I expect to use it a lot more. It is still, at the very least, one of the coolest toys I've ever played with! |

Can your Motif turn into a rack full of guitar amps and effects at the touch of a screen or plug into a Cisco router to configure it or run a planetarium program controlling your telescope mount, or turn into a quick DJ rig? Take a break and surf the web or play a cool game with great graphics. I'm posting this on my iPad 2. The Motif is great for music making, but having all these options in a highly portable device that morphs into whatever I need at the time, makes it highly valued for versatility. I know this site is for music specifically, but really, the steps Apple has taken to push the music capabilities are very good so far and we are sure to see it develop into something better in the future. I find a lot of the apps to have great sounds, are fun to use, feels more like a piece of hardware than pure PC use unless you are using dedicated midi controllers, and again, they all go with me in a highly portable form. We just need a little more inter-app connectivity and quick app switching to get a better workflow. Music making right now on the iPad or iPhone feels like building with Legos. Compartmentalized apps do not make for a smooth workflow, even though they maximize resource efficiency. ---- "I am a meat popsicle" Soundcloud Vondragonnoggin Soundclick Wormhelmet |

---The Motif is a musical instrument that sounds great, allows for layering, sequencing, is built for stage use, and easily midi's up with other midi things. It's not intended to be a guitar rack, a router, or a game machine and to be honest I can't think of a time when an audience member has asked me to stop playing and present a slide show for a Crab Nebula but your last paragraph says a lot to me...
"Music making right now on the iPad or iPhone feels like building with Legos. Compartmentalized apps do not make for a smooth workflow, even though they maximize resource efficiency." I do not agree with the "maximize resource efficiency" part but we disagree...who cares? |

I think if you can sync MTC, then you might be able to use a couple iPads and an iPhone for live work. I think you missed the point about versatility, but no matter. I use my iPad guitar stuff live or even keyboard stuff while running several sequencers (RM1x, MC307, ST224, SH32).
I like the Motif, but no need for one with my current equipment. ---- "I am a meat popsicle" Soundcloud Vondragonnoggin Soundclick Wormhelmet |

I own a Motif XF6. I'm not a keyboard player, really, but I spent the extra bux on the Motif thinking I could enjoy for a decade or more, based on the longevity of the original Motif.
Long story short, I spend WAAAY more time with my Ipad3. I have used my Motif as a midi controller for my Ipad though. Fun times! |
