Hey,

I have my main monitors, and i also have a sub, (Adam A7X & Sub 8 )

These take up 2 of my 3 outputs on my mackie big knob, i have one output left and some desk space, and i was looking at like a 'grotbox' as people call it to put in to my last output, just for that final reference, I'm not on a huge budget, maybe 50/60 GBP, i just want something that can be used as a good reference, I'm not talking about NS10's or avantones, just something that may reveal something my monitors don't or something

Any suggestions greatly appreciated

Mike

I use a set of Sennheiser HD202 cans and a set of creative gigawork T40s for referencing. The latter is particularly ruthless at showing up any bass issues.

Yeah, I've already got a pair of cans which are fairly coloured and i have learnt really well but them T40's look very interesting, can i ask, i remember an old flat mate of mine had a pair of logic speakers, they were 5.1 with a sub which put me off buying them but i remember i made a track, and i couldn't really hear the reverb or a synth that i had put in the back ground in my room (before my room was treated), then i played the track through her monitors and suddenly the synth was in my face and i could hear all reverb perfect,

would you say these are on a similar level? I know thats kind of hard to compare, but i also purchased a pair of logitech speakers expecting the same results, but nothing like it, they just sounded like anything could sound good in them, i remember with my flat mates if you got the kick at the wrong level - you knew about it!

Here they are :

http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0006LCMK4/ref=asc_df_B0006LCMK48 346286?smid=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&tag=googlecouk06-21&linkCode=asn& creative=22206&creativeASIN=B0006LCMK4

But with them being 5.1 and with a sub, no go for me, them T40's look very nice though just wondering if you know they would be similar?

Cheers

I have an old Sharp dual-cassette boombox with a CD input, that I use as a grotbox. I also have a Phillips MC-220 micro hi-fi that has an input for an external source that I use as a reference system. Both came from second-hand shops.

I've even got in the habit of bouncing mixes down to MP3 so I can check them on the built-in speaker on my mobile phone. Smile

+1 on the phone - i do that all the time, i know how tracks should sound coming out of my iPhone speaker so it is always a good reference as well

@ Tehlord : one other question about these t40's, i see the audio input is a single 3.5mm jack, the output on my mackie big knob is stereo 1/4'' jack, so 2 jack essentially, is there any way to get an output from my mackie in to these speakers or will i have to just have them output from my mac direct?

Cheers
