I've always wanted to go for the Softube FET Compressor, despite me having to break my vow about never buying an iLok, but the price is too steep.

Now I noticed that FET is available as a Reason Rack Extension, but check out the discrepancy in price...

FET (VST) - $219/€174
FET (RE) - $125/€99

Whilst finding this to be grossly unfair to VST users, I wonder what Softube have to say about this matter.

You can get it for that or less if you look around and/or wait for it to be on sale. In fact I saw the bundle with the little reverb, FET and whatever the EQ pack is called for $150, so $50 each together? I think cakewalk had the same bundle on sale for quite some time for not much more than that, etc.

As to whether the pricing is fair? I dunno, what is? I don't know much about p-head's format or pricing. Maybe those can't be discounted or at least maybe they want it to look that way for now. I suppose there's also the argument that the real plug-ins will work in more than one host.

I don't know if they take advantage of the CV thing, but that is really nice. It's not nice enough for me to want to work in such a closed system though, and the thought of repurchasing plug-ins you already have, if that's what you'd have to do, is not at all attractive.

The RE price is an introductory price.

I don't think it's unfair. For example Softube does not have to pay for shop expenses, copy protection maintenance, cross platform development compatibility etc.etc. the list really goes on. That is all on Propellerhead take.

If you want anyone to blame then blame outrageous ilok fees. It seems that Props copy protection scheme is way more affordable. You really need to understand these factors and you'll see that price is ok.

Looks like the regular price for the RE version is $149?

The other interesting thing is that for SONAR ProChannel, they just include it in the VST package. If you had the VST, you got the ProChannel as a free upgrade, and if you bought the ProChannel, it came with the VST. Same for AAX when they released it. RE is completely separate.

Propellerheads will have a deal, maybe even covered some of the dev cost to get them on board, also don't expect the RE version to sounds as good as the VST version. I found that the Native Instruments and Softube collaboration was no where near as good as the stand alone softubes plugs.

1 thing for sure is that you cannot sell your RE plugin, while for the vst one it's possible.

On the OT note, any real news from Softube? Seems like since TLA1000 they haven't debuted any new stuff.

Further OT and not limited to Softube....would you purchase again a Rack Extension plugin that you already purchased as a vst/i ? I don't own Reason. I'm just curious how many people would buy both versions..........
