Using CUBASE 5 and yourockguitar midi controller.
How do you apply post Dynamic (expression/volume) data to pre-recorded VST midi notes via mod wheel? My trouble is i use YRG to input midi notes (very effective imo) but the only way for consistency is to use it in TAP MODE but this bypasses velocity sensitive function and this renders it useless as a expressive midi controller. I have to draw in the velocities and expression..which takes forever and is much simpler using keyboard.. I know there's a function on cubase where you can do this with velocities in the midi editor. But to know how to use the mod wheel for dynamics would be more useful. I also know i could use an external expression pedal in conjunction with the midi controller in real time which seems the option at the moment...or using the mod wheel of my keyboard as i play the YRG. Thanks very much. ---- New Track by Sonatina Symphonic!!! JAWS orchestral mock up! http://www.youtube.com/user/MidiOrchestra/videos |

it's a matter of mapping the controller to something useful for dynamics in the target instrument.
for instance the Garritan way, GPO did map CC1 to a kind of expression that brought in more volume, more timbre and more vibrato in. BUT this is much more useful in combination with velocity. I have read of people using VSL instruments that prefer to have consistent velocity and use crossfade velocity - which is an option in those instruments - instead and they'd assign the desired controller to that function in that interface. It seems awful to me, but I don't know. That's about control of the velocity layers; which isn't the same for every instrument. typically CC11 expression is used in instruments as a second sort of volume control; often not really more than that, but some things bring in more of the timbre of the thing. It depends on the instrument, its mapping capabilities. If you can force the instrument to accept CC1 for 'expression' and it is programmed to make some use of 'expression'... at the end of the day, not having control over velocities isn't optimal. |

Hey Jancivil, how are ya, you've helped in the past, thanks for the heads up.
So are you saying i'm making too much deal about velocities and i should draw em in? The guitar in TAP mode has one velocity, but in picking mode using strings it does have velocity but not as accurate. Lets put velocities aside here then. What i really want is to use mod wheel as i play the guitar. Apparently now there's several ways to approach. 1. just use a keyboard instead and spend hours editing. 2. record mod wheel data on to separate track and merge when happy. 3. get expression pedal and merge box, make sure cubase is set to receive all data? 4. Use guitar in tap mode (left hand) and use the wheel on keyboard (right hand) i'm assuming with a merge box again. p.s I actually have garritan instant orchestra so maybe we can use that as an example. pls take a look http://yourockguitar.com/forum/index.php?topic=698.0, perhaps you can sail me in the right direction, ---- New Track by Sonatina Symphonic!!! Not for me to say what you should do, but I use largely keyboard controller, yet am not much of a keyboard player; people that are like to scale velocity so what they input is close to something useful but it's not all that meaningful to me. I create detailed realistic 'performances' and I HAVE to do a whole lot of editing of velocity. Much of what I input is pretty off the mark.... So we're sort of in the same boat.

I was wondering this myself, so thank you for posting this thread. ---- "Be excellent to each other." Dax IX (Music) | Ambient Online Cubase 7, A Few VSTi, Win8 Pro 64, AMD FX-6100, 32GB RAM, 3.25TB total HDD, SSD |
