WSM is a free on-line magazine devoted to various aspects of computer sound. I've written a piece in the latest issue on Alchemy's additive synthesis capabilities. Included is a freely downloadable additive sound generator utility that produces randomly generated CSV files using parameterized user selections. I hope that a few of you will find this of interest and even useful. Check it out here:

Thanks for the heads-up on the article in WSM. A very interesting and well written piece.

I'd be happy to upload it ... it makes way more sense to have it available on your site. Let's wait a week and see if anyone reports problems. I did a fair amount of testing on a PC but have no Mac and only was able to verify that it launches OK.

I'll be in touch about this. Thanks.

Can't comment on the results (quality of output) yet but it works on my iMac (OSX 10.6.8 ). I had no problem generating a set of files and importing them into Alchemy. I'll check it out more later this weekend. Thanks a lot for making this available!

This is now available in the Camel site User Area. One caution though: the accompanying text there says Alchemy 1.0, but there was a change in the pitch values in CSV files somewhere after the initial version of Alchemy. The Addulator utility works with the most recent version of Alchemy (1.2), but possibly not earlier versions.

Oops - that was a little confusing. I've removed "for Alchemy" so that the version number refers to your utility. Now labelled:

Addulator Additive Generator v1.0

Peace,
Andy.

Wow, thank you for this (especially the source code)! I've always wanted to get into the additive editor more and this looks like a lot of fun.

When I downloaded it, it came as a .CamelSounds file which I thought was weird. I double-clicked it to install anyway and it said it extracted it to a Utilities folder. I had to do some digging around my Mac to find it in /Library/Application Support/Camel Audio/Alchemy/Utilities/Addulator.

Thanks again, very cool!

Thanks. I just handed a zip file over to the CA folks to put in their download area ... I didn't actually try downloading it myself, so I'm not sure what's going on. I'll try to find time to download it this weekend and see if there's anything that's amiss.

I probably should have explained this via email, but for all Alchemy files in our User Library we package as .CamelSounds files. This makes the installation simpler for most users because it's the same format as the other content, and will be installed at the same time.

Utilities are always installed here:

Alchemy/Utilities/App Name

The idea being that we have a standard location for Alchemy related files. If you prefer to have control over this stuff just open the .CamelSounds file with Win RAR or some other RAR utility. 7-zip is a good one, and it's free.

Peace,
Andy.

I should add that I didn't change any of the files - just put them in the correct folder for the Camel Sounds file.
