Btw they called it 'dub step' because 'bee shoo' or 'bee step' wasn't nearly as cool.. but it might have started with some turntables and a pesky bee.

For better or worse, most people's conception of the genre is based on skrillex's style, which is probably better described as complextro... but then if everyone believes in the wrong definition of a name, maybe the definition isn't wrong anymore.

Dubstep purists hate this stuff, but the starting point for "popular" dubstep is skrillex's scary monsters and nice sprites album.

I think there are a few main elements to the style- there's the use of half-time beats with accented upbeats that are borrowed from reggae/dub (intro section to first of the year), there's the buffer-repeat-glitch elements that are borrowed from idm (minus the polyrhythms), there's the sidechained 4-on-the-floor stuff that's borrowed from daft punk and justice, then there's the noisy choruses which are probably influenced by various strains of gabba/industrial/idm. Finally (maybe most importantly for skrillex's popularity), there's the element of pop song melodicism, hooks, and song structure.

Listen to Dubstep allstars compillations, they give good picture of different aspects of gender and how it evolved over time.

Vol.08 by Distance is actually one of my all time favourite records, definitely worth checking out.

Quite different then Skrillex stuff. <- real dubstep.
