Sony : MDRZX100 $20 US

Yamaha - RH5MA $55 US

I've used both. I upgraded to KRK KNS 6400 (about $90 US) and got rid of the yamaha pair.

The Sony's got lost or broken. I had them about 2 years. For how cheap they are they are very comfortable with great sound. I am going to buy another pair soon!

Audio technica ATH-D40fs. (around the max budget)

They'll prevent you to raise the bass more than required. While it will give you a silky and pleasent sensation, the sound of the track will still be correct on some entry-level audio gear.

Sennheiser-HD-202 - Bit flimsy - don't sit or stand on them, or look at them in a nasty way Wink

Very very good for the money - £20-30, depending where you shop around.
Comfortable, but all the money went into the 'sonics' not the hardware durability. A great second pair of headphones for referencing (On a very limited budget of course) But over 200 reviews giving nearly 5 stars at Amazon. Make your own mind up.

I have a few other pairs but my latest are the Presonus HD7, bought mine from Scan Computers - suggest you do the same, they come quick they come nicely boxed and they come cheap, just over £30 I think.

Wow, what a fantastic pair of headphones. Sit on them, Stand on them, look at them funny - they don't care - they still sound great. They even look cool. Well they look cool to me. Built like a tank. And sound absolutely amazing.
For the money, I defy anyone to get a better sounding, better looking, more comfortable and more durable pair of cans. For Thirty quid from Scan.
They are semi-closed so you will need to take that into account about your environment. I love them. I use them more than cans I paid £120 for. Ok, I know I am no Lunatique: http://www.head-fi.org/lists/display/view/id/29725
when it comes to cans. Still, I'd really love to hear his opinion on the HD7s.
It would be educational.

Try them, I would buy them over the HD-202s any day - far more sturdy (though not necessarily better sounding).

cheers.

Do you want closed / sealed headphones...especially good for blocking out the monitor feed from going into the recording mic during tracking. Or, semi open back where you can hear some of the sound from the outside of the headphones?

I needed a cheap set that were closed and sounded pretty good. I ended up getting these;

http://www.amazon.com/Monoprice-Premium-Hi-Fi-Style-Headphon e/dp/B007SP2CO2

I haven't got them yet but they look like they'll meet my needs as stated above.

I use a pair of AKG K240's for more critical listening. More than your budget though.

They look almost exactly like my AKG k240s! Looks like a good deal for semi-open backs!

I was looking into a pair of these, it looks like they have auto-adjustment dohickeys on the earphones; I didn't really get on with this arrangement on the AKGs I had briefly (felt like they were pulling the cups up off my ears), is this a similar arrangement or maybe a little 'tamer'? Smile

No, those are just knobs for show Wink

No adjustments on the headphones themselves.

The sound is lacking in high end fidelity even to my untrained ears, but damn it is so close, for thirty quid. It would be really silly not to buy a pair.
I use the HD-202s too, plus about another five pairs I have. But the HD7s are so comfortable. They are semi closed, but I have done vocals with them and the leakage is not too bad, acceptable for demo recordings.

They are just a nice flush, plush, posh, piece of headgear. The HD-202s don't necessarily sound better, maybe, I don't know. But the Presonus are built solid.

They have a cable that is not too short or too long - it is not coiled but straight, coming out of the left-side can.

I throw down the gauntlet! And Lunatique this is especially aimed at you.
Can you please try and get your hands on a pair of these. I know that you love your cans, and I respect your opinion on what you have to say about headphones.
It would be a real treat for us cheap old KVR'rs to know what you think about these. I know they won't compare to the stuff you got that you paid thousands of dollars for, but please, just give us a quick opinion, please?

The HD-202s are very tight to the head and I suppose could be called fully closed like my Sony MDR-7506 - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sony-MDR7506-MDR-7506-Headphones-Wir ed/dp/B000AJIF4E

These are the ones that I bought for £120. They are very complex.
The highs are almost unbearable like a Yamaha NS-10 tweeter that you have to put the proverbial toilet paper over. But when you learn them they are great.

They have had a lot of bad press recently and that is why they cost £50 less than a year or two ago.

You can buy them for £70 now. That is a bargain.

Buscemi (where is he btw?) said something interesting. He had an old pair of these that he loved, but said his new pair sounded like shit.

Buscemi, if you are around, please correct me if I am wrong.

Still. Pay £30 for the Presonus, they aren't quite as high-end as the Sonys but a f*** of a lot easier to use.

cheers.

I've a pair of Audio technica ATH-D40FSs which I love, just need a cheap second pair that sound reasonable for chucking in my bag when out and about (a friend has a couple of pairs of cheap phillips phones that need to be heard, *soooo* bad, literally unusable even for monitoring while recording him).

I bought these a couple of months ago. Only use it to keep doing something while away from home visiting relatives, and are not bad at all: can use them for hours and back home what I did still make sense in my monitors. Costed 35€ in a shop:

Hi codec_spurt. I got your PM, and thank you for the kind words.

My headphone journey was more or less completed a long time ago, when I finally settled on the headphone that fulfills all of my needs. I was never into collecting anything in my life--I only bought what I really needed, and if I found something better to fulfilled my needs better, I'd sell off what I didn't use anymore.

Since having found headphones that fulfilled my needs, although I've kept up with new developments in the headphone market, I have stopped auditioning and trying more headphones, unless they happen to fall into my lap or I happen to be at a store. Even then, I only pay attention to higher-end headphones as I have no need to limit myself to the lower-end headphones, and by default, higher-end headphones are almost always better in quality. Every once a while if there's buzz about a particular lower-end headphone that's swept the industry for being amazing bang for the buck, I might give it a whirl, but I'd never go out of my way, because I have no need for it in my life.

So, if I happen to come across the HD7, I'll give it a listen, but I'm not going to go out of my way to find a pair. If I do listen to a pair, I'll let you guys know what I think.

BTW, you guys might find these threads useful:
http://www.gearslutz.com/board/so-much-gear-so-little-time/5 08831-best-mixing-headphones.html

http://www.gearslutz.com/board/mastering-forum/612765-master ing-headphones.html

I gave a lot of valuable information and tips in those threads, including how to properly EQ headphones into the ideal neutral response that you can trust, which means you can make lower-end headphones sound far better than its price point suggests--as long as its driver can handle full-range response.

Thanks for the reply Lunatique. I'm glad you got to the bottom of it eventually.
It certainly sounded like a very interesting journey.

And thank you for the other links. They will be a great resource I am sure, for us novices.

Btw, I hope you don't mind me adding to it by including this link:
http://www.head-fi.org/t/473885/isone-pro-the-best-thing-you -could-ever-get-for-your-headphones-on-your-computer

Over 40 pages of opinions. I found this thread when I was thinking about buying Jeroen's plug in and your thread helped me make up my mind.

Thanks Lunatique.
