These days the thing I'm playing most is a banjo ukulele. I also regularly play upright bass in a band, and I have played guitar, drums, and electric bass in other bands.

Ukulele is great, mainly due to its size compared to the other stuff I listed. "Jazzy" chords sound awesome on it and they are easy to play. Its range matches my singing range almost perfectly, which makes it easy to sing along with.

So I put "other," though I'm equally good on kazoo.

I bet you don't play guitar as badly as I do! Which, by construction, makes you a better keyboard player. I get around this by only claiming to bang on keyboards. I can manage on (diatonic) harmonica but these days I'm a bit rusty.

I've been meaning to take up the banjo in recent years, but I have a really crappy banjo and it sucks the life out of me to try and make progress.

As far as guitar goes, lately I've been trying to become competent in open G. It's taking longer than it probably should, but it's going ok considering how much time I have to spend on my hobbies.

After a few false starts, I found the double bass at 8 and it suited me. I was classically trained to grade 8, but lost interest in being in an orchestra, the theory, and the exams. I started on bass guitar at 12, combining my double bass knowledge with books, and that's been my main instrument since. I can play other instruments, but it's nearly always as a bassist. My piano is passable, as I had lessons, but I'm entirely self taught on guitar so I'm sloppy at best.

I play guitar, bass and keyboard.

My keyboard playing consists of playing a melody and then fixing up all my mistakes in the midi editor.

My guitar playing consists of tuning to open D, barring across the fretboard and moving up and down.

My bass playing consists of listening to what I played on guitar and copying that to give it some bottom end. Sometimes I will add a flourish of something different just to keep things interesting.

I played trombone for 2 weeks in high school. I think I hit a note once, but I can't be sure.

The biggest thing holding me back is that I just hate practicing. I just want to create and record.

It's immensely satisfying to get a note out of a brass instrument. Even if you can't play it's worth the experience to practice until you get that note. Then play the hell out of that note; get your back into it and make that note sing!

You should produce dance music then, it doesn't actually require you to be a musician, anyone can do it!

But no, seriously, you want to hit that note before you give up on brass.

My parents forced my to take accordin lessons when I was very little Nutter

Then I took drumming lessons for about 1.5 - 2 years before losing interest.

Didn't like keyboard instruments back then. I thought synthesizers were just for cheesy organ and piano sounds, which was not what I wanted.

Then I discovered you could actually *create* electronic music (not just press play on some machine and have it play pre-recorded loops), and learnt the difference between the synthesizer and keyboards. The drumming lessons have been of help when dealing with rythms, but other than that I have no relevant formal training.

I voted vocalist because, while keys are my best instrument in the sense of traditional tools, my skill is better with voice. Granted, I've done few final compositions with vocals because I suck at putting words and music together.

If it's main instrument only then it would have to be windsynth.

It used to be sax for many years before that though.

I also have plenty of other instruments that I can play half-decently too, but that's not the purpose of this thread, is it? Wink

I currently play bass and keys in bands, and write music on keys and guitar (and PC). I used to play guitar in bands too, but there are a million guitarists around so I have been reduced to filling in as bassist/keyboard player instead. 5 guitars and no bass does not a good rock band make.

Shame you can only choose one instrument Smile

started on keyboards so I guess it's my main instrument, but it doesn't seem I play them much anymore. Since recently joining my friends band I've been mostly playing bass (since i'm the bass player) nwhich I have been playing almost as long. I can play guitar too but I'm probably more comfortable on the other two.
