My early 90's RG550 had stock pickups. The difference of putting a Dimarzio Norton in the bridge and a PRS Vintage Bass in the neck was astounding. The Vintage Bass makes it sound like a Les Paul and the Norton makes it sound like EVH.robojam wrote:Yeah, most of the Ibanez electrics I've played have had pickup replacements as the owners haven't like the originals, so I've never really heard the stock pickups.

Man, the money I spend for self enjoyment (stop it!!!!! )
I'm really looking forward to having a fretless again. Other than the "flat black" which I KNOW will wear out, it's prolly going to be perfect. Thin neck (and easily sandable) fret markers and I'ma gonna get my Jaco ON! (AGAIN, stop it! )
I can't wait to be able to hit little harmonics and slide up/down with them. Then only thing is I've got guitarist-IDIS, which means it's going to be tough to wiggle instead of bend (What did I tell you stop it! )

So far this is my #1 option. It'd be Duncan Dimebucker bridge, Heavy Blues middle, Pearly Gates neck.Uncle E wrote:Yes, this is an excellent point! A hot, dark sounding hum-cancelling single coil, such as the Dimarzio Virtual Vintage Heavy Blues 2, will make an excellent match to humbuckers and won't sound harsh with a 500K volume pot. I hate using standard single coils with 500K pots.robojam wrote:The other thing you could do is buy a single coil sized rail and put it in the middle...
I'm getting kind of tired of reading wiring diagrams, though. And the mutimeter won't arrive until next Tuesday, the soldering iron not until next Thursday. Not like I'll have the CASH for 3 pickups and a switch for weeks, though!

Do get a pickup that has become uncomfortable wound
Ehm.. guess what i've been listening to lately..
Do you guys have any preferences duncan vs dimarzio? Im yet again stuck reading and listening to them all trying to decide what to go for ... for 'that' guitar that i'll 'eventually' get.
Ie, Dimarzio's Area vs Duncan's stacks. Though maybe i should go for hotter stuff ...

While at one time they both had their own niche, I think they both pretty much cover the same ground now and it's really just down to personal preference.Crackbaby wrote:duncan vs dimarzio?
I don't know that either makes anything really unique anymore that the other doesn't at least have something similar to.
What might make more sense is if you list specific pickups or sounds and get recommendations for which is better or what might achieve a particular sound.
Also, don't forget that they're not the only manufacturers on the block and there are a lot of boutique pickup manufacturers that really do have something unique.

Personally, I don't think there's a better pickup for a basswood body, Floyd-equipped guitar than the Dimarzio Norton. That's as good as it gets.Crackbaby wrote:Do you guys have any preferences duncan vs dimarzio?
I also like that Dimarzio has a lot of models that skate the line between humbuckers and single coils. EJ Customs, Humbuckers from Hell, Virtual Vintage Heavy Blues 2, HS-3's, etc. The HS-3 is one of the best bridge pickups I've ever used, be it humbucker OR single coil, and I'm sure that's reason Yngwie depended on it for so long (and would probably still depend on it today if not for lucrative endorsement deals).

I've considered a 'bucker in the center, like a "L'il 59" or such, but I'm iffy on it for no reason I can put my hand on...robojam wrote:If you're putting something like a Dimebucker in the bridge, have you considered something like a Hot Rails single coil sized humbucker in the middle?
Given that I'm going to re-jib the Strat to all single-coils, packing the RG with humbuckers makes a certain amount of sense to me..
I seem to split my time between Texas blues/jazz/ambient on one hand and metal/hard rock on the other, so I'm aiming the Stat at the former and the RG at the latter.
Might need a 3rd. guitar.. I can sell the bass to make room and do bass on the synth..

The Lil' 59's make my strat sound nearly identical to my Les Paul. That's a very good pickup.

I think Duncan can cover some of that ground though - the JB series is probably in the same ball park as the Nortons.
Duncan also has a range of almost hybrid pickups too - they're now making a lot of strat sized pickups with all kinds of different specs.
I'm surprised there are actually a few Youtube videos that are actually making direct comparisons between Dimarzio and Duncan. They're probably worth checking out.

Duncan has a lot of strat sized pickups that sound like humbuckers or sound like hum-cancelling single coils. What they don't have are anything in between, which is what the HS-3, Heavy Blues 2, Injector, EJ Custom, and Humbucker from Hell are so cool for.robojam wrote:Duncan also has a range of almost hybrid pickups too - they're now making a lot of strat sized pickups with all kinds of different specs.

Interesting. I'll have to see what I can dig up on Google about some of those.Uncle E wrote:Duncan has a lot of strat sized pickups that sound like humbuckers or sound like hum-cancelling single coils.
