Cell 48 System 1 looks very good. Even though there is only one oscillator, all three waveforms are available at once. This is a recipe for some tight bass sounds a la Roland SH-101 (although, without the sub soc).
The Minibrute has this design as well, where it can mix various waves. The issue here is that the sawtooth and the square do not produce a full sound when mixed together. Certainly, it's nothing like what a saw+ square sound on the SH-101. With this in mind, it would be very interesting to hear what this Cell 48 sounds like. I was wondering about that. Very cool in that case! Having the ability to choose multiple waves at the same time is also how it was on, for example, the Pro One (... if I remember correctly). And yes, it would be interesting to hear whether the combined waves "lose" something.
I think I'm going to set my sites on the Foundation system. But building a full Cell system is also attractive... especially if one were to just start with System 1 (e.g. $599). Of course, one could just acquire modules (and not just from Pittsburgh) and totally build one's own system... but these Pittsburgh systems look really nice. They do look nice. The self contained design of Cell 48 reminds me of Dark Energy, in that both are patchable synths which can be used without anything else. The only issue I have (and it's just my own preference) is how the coarse frequency setting works. It's available as a continuous sweep. I prefer an octave switch. |
