I'm sure you actually know that this is not true: The SY99 can indeed load user-specified PCM samples for AWM from floppy disk or SYSEX.

This is, in my opinion, perhaps the best feature that makes it infinitely customisable and the possibilities endless. Of course, it has plenty other advantages over the 77s: much better effects and master keyboard functions, supposedly better converters, 10 songs in the sequencer instead of 1, etc.

Well...this is a bump from the past! :-o You know this thread is from 2009?

Yep. I must have been thinking of my SY77, which can't do it.

Of course, but I thought the information may be appreciated by other users who find this thread through searching in the future. I dislike giant bumps as much as anyone else, but I don't feel they are inappropriate if they create a more complete picture that a reader may not get otherwise.

Oh, you can bump it, I have no issue with that. :-) I was just surprised to see the thread 'emerge' from the interwebz abyss after all this time. :D
It also reminded me that I wanted to do another SY sound set.

I'm also looking at a D50, JP8000 and a Lead 2X to sit on the 4 tier Jasper stand I've just ordered.

Oh yes.

A cool threesome! That lot would keep you occupied for ages.

I just traded my Korg 01/W Pro for an SY77 (even though I already have a TG77). It needs a backlight, though, but has a great keyboard feel. It sits on my 3 tier stand above the Juno 106 and DW8000 (with the D550 in the rack beside it). The Korg was just monstrously huge, too heavy to gig with and no space to set up at home.

Haha, well, in that case, I'm glad to help! ;)

Even compared to the SYs? It would have to be truly a behemoth to do that! But unless you meant a 01/WProX, the normal WPro is about the same as the SY77 in both dimensions and weight. (Citations: for the 01/W series and for the SY77)

I recently got an SY99 (finally!), and it's absolutely huge! And quite far beyond my useful carrying abilities at 20 kg. It really makes my SY77, which previously seemed pretty huge, look like a little toy!

I would love a SY99. I have a SY77, but to be able to load in samples into an SY must be great.
Hey Bluedad, I have just been listening to most of your music on your site - very impressive. Solitary Torment is brilliant and I can imagine it being used in a Tarantino movie or something :)

My SY99 gets 20 this year and still works like a charm.
This thing is built like a tank! It also almost weighs as much as a tank with my flightcase (30 kg).
Last year i replaced the display backlight (yellow = much brighter and better contrast than the original blue). But this was the most horrible repair i've ever done. You have to completely disassemble the whole keyboard into (felt like) thousand parts and screws. Now i know that i would never do this again.
I have expanded it to 3mb sample ram. Yes, and it's indeed possible to make decent pads and choirs with a single 100kb sample spread across the whole keyboard. I've also loaded some own single cycle waves and you can use them as 7th operator for fm ("RCM Synthesis" as Yamaha calls it).
My SY99 is surrounded by a WavestationEX, a Kawai K5000S, a MicroQ keyboard and two MicrowaveXTs.

Welcome to the club, new SY77 owner! :)
That keyboard is great.

I'd love the Sy99 as well, perhaps just because I'd like to get that longer keyboard, however the size and weight of this monster is frightening (perhaps it doesn't weight as much as my Arp Solina. Now this is heavy! :-o ).
