One sound I really admire from Crystal Castles' album III is the bass synth that comes in at the end of Mercenary (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EdFjf4tCRlU @2:00). Although the foundation of the voice runs throughout the track, the synth gets really aggressive and distorted for the last chorus.
I've been trying to identify what's going on in the sound, but I could really use some help. The bass that runs through the whole track sounds big and faraway, so I'm assuming there is judicious use of reverb (in mono) and possibly some kind of chorusing, but I'm not sure what's going on in it (maybe filtered saw waves with some LFO on the filter frequency and q?).
The voice at the end sounds like there's some heavy distortion and compression, but I think there may be a formant filter applied, as it sounds a touch like a voice to me. Also I think there's gotta be some reverb, as the bass still sounds pretty big to me (despite it not having a ton stereoimage, which always impresses me). If anyone has any idea how what kind of processing needs to happen for this, and ideally what the bass synth's foundation is, I'd love hear something.
