400 bucks? Not for the likes of me, I s'pose.
I wouldn't spend that much total on four DAWs even if they each gave me daily sexual gratification.

That would be cool. The only question is if they can make it small enough for you to crowd surf.hibidy wrote:someone suggested a brain to audio interface at the abe's forum.
So you've priced yourself out of every major daw barring crazy sales.MachFront wrote:400 bucks? Not for the likes of me, I s'pose.

Reaper works perfectly well for me for 60 bucks.Ogopogo wrote:So you've priced yourself out of every major daw barring crazy sales.MachFront wrote:400 bucks? Not for the likes of me, I s'pose.

I often use energyXT (a little more than 50 bucks).
I still use Podium sometimes ($50 if I ever wanted to go beyond using the fully functional free version).
I don't want for anything. So, no I haven't priced myself out of anything except spending too much. *shrug*

Well I should have said almost every major daw, I guess Reaper is major, but yes it seems you have priced yourself out of most of them. I don't think you can't put a definite price on features if they help you make music the way you want so I dunno if you can say those daws are not worth it. But I see you are satisfied, so . I didn't realize there were good ones out there for that little.

I honestly didn't know. I figured anything was possible.hibidy wrote:Again, fair enough. Personally I knew this is right around where bitwig would be.

Were it only available at the full commercial license price I guess I'd be using energyXT or Podium or Tracktion or MU.LAB.
Maybe I'm a simpleton where features are concerned though, so there's that.

That's MSRP. You never know what the "intro" price could be...VitaminD wrote:$300 Euro = $400 USD
...ouch! That puts it in line with a lot of other nice Host software.
Why did I ever think this would be priced in the 200-250 USD range?
All I know is see JavaScript API for controllers meaning it's probably open and documented unlike Ableton's. That's a strong sell for me. I probably won't buy at $400 but if there is a competitive upgrade offer, I'd consider...

You CAN'T be serious. After all the grief you gave people about the cat pics and the wait, you're put off by the price?VitaminD wrote:$300 Euro = $400 USD

Well, welly, well, well ! i'll be f'd! i thought this thing would be about $700US or more. i'm glad i saved my buck$! almost suckr'd myself into getting Cubase 7 and a 1/2 (which kinda reminds me of fellini's 8 1/2...a real joke...lot's of false starts).kennyda wrote:Hi folks. Just got word. Price is €299, so exactly half the cost of Ableton Live Suite. Release date is March 26th.
i sure hope bitwig works. being a former developer of large scale government/corporate (what's the real difference) s/w systems, i know how bad s/w with complicated requirements can turn out. watching bitwig accumulate its functions gave me the sweats! i'm really glad they took their time (hopefully...to get it right).
can't wait to start back up the 'learning curve'!

For a snowy/rainy weekend:fedexnman wrote:There are ways to use windows vst with wine and use them in Linux apps , but i dont have time to figure that one out ..... But you could use Bitwig as a closed system like Reason .
Download reaper, to your /home/you folder
and from a normal internet ready linux install,
use these commands:
wine reaper4581-install.exe
sudo apt-get install wineasio
sudo apt-get install qjackctl
regsvr32 wineasio.dll
use a file manager to drag your .dlls to a vst folder such as
/home/you/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/Steinberg/VstPlugins
Start qjackctl
Start reaper based on it's path, I prefer /home/you (case sensitive):
wine reaper/reaper.exe
Configure reaper to use wineasio as it's asio device,
and then scan your vstfolder
Click the qjackctl Setup tab, and click the > widgets
on the right side of the setup panel to select your soundcard/chip
The commands aplay -l and arecord -l
will reveal your linux kernel detected soundcards,
their names in brackets should be listed when clicking the > widgets
in qjackctl Setup panel. Example,
you@yourbox:~$ arecord -l
**** List of CAPTURE Hardware Devices ****
card 0: M2496 [M Audio Audiophile 24/96], device 0: ICE1712 multi [ICE1712 multi]
Subdevices: 1/1
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 1: ICH [Intel ICH], device 0: Intel ICH [Intel ICH]
Subdevices: 1/1
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 1: ICH [Intel ICH], device 1: Intel ICH - MIC ADC [Intel ICH - MIC ADC]
Subdevices: 1/1
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
Also choose Frames/Period, Samplerate, and Periods/Buffer
(use Periods/Buffer of 3 for usb soundcards)
To run a standalone windows app that was installed by a factory installer,
copy and paste the path to a terminal (apply quotes if a space
is in the path) and run, for example
wine /home/you/.wine/drive_c/"Program Files/Native Instruments/FM8/FM8.exe"
Don't know how Bitwig will relate to qjackctl gui yet.
Some software, like reaper, will auto-connect, some have the option to do it
manually. Press the qjackctl Connect button,
and a 3 tabbed window opens, each tab has two panels,
for ins & outs, select the desired item
on each side, and press the Connect button on this panel.
(not the connect button on the main gui) Lines are drawn for virtual cables
between connected items.
This qjackctl gui can be viewed on many youtubes,
as ardour, hydrogen, zynaddsubfx, rakarrack, ubuntu studio and others
use the same procedures to launch and connect instruments and effects.
Cheers
