AMD 64 processor and Asus motherboard

My smps has got short circuited.. can it be replaced with an old one? My pc has AMD 64 processor and Asus motherboard. thr was some shotrt ckt in smps n this burning smell n the pc shut down itself . should i try to restart it or wld it may cause harm to motherboard? also i have an old pc with p3 processor but its smps luks diff thn my new one. can i replace d new one with the old 1 ,or it wldnt be compatible?

If the motherboard connectors are the same, disconnect the hard-drive,
remove any valuable add-in cards and peripherals,
connect the other power supply, and restart booting from
a linux live cd/dvd.

Get one off a linux magazine cover, or download an iso and burn to media,
a small fast iso is at mirror listed at this link:

If all is well, power off, and add one card/peripheral at a time,
power off each time, to insure no circuits were damaged.
