I dare ask...WHY?while the MP3 encoder is for S1 Artist (I think this is a Fraunhofer License) is about 10 EUR.
MS settled the big lawsuite with Fraunhofer and paid for mp3 codec licensing forever and a day ago. The only limitation is that it be 44.100 16 bit. Lame is a perfectly legal and free mp3 encoder with all the capabilites of Fraunhofer if you require that the format be .mp3
IMHO mp3 is a crappy format who's time has come and gone.
This takes S1 down a notch in my search for a new daw.

Always nice to get an update... Interesting idea about the add-ons, and they are reasonably priced too.
Um, but I'm up to my eyeballs with 'analog' drum samples, and I use the Orange for guitar distortion. So not much point in buying them at the moment.
Still, it could be interesting to see what happens on that front for the future. I still have no regrets about jumping on the S1 bandwagon, and I'm pretty pleased with the DAW.
Fingers crossed for a big V3 release!

The thing is, that the official license (the actual technology) still resides with both Phillips and Fraunhofer. AAC completely belongs to Fraunhofer (else, it would be more widespread) - and I personally think that HD-AAC is the definite future of CODECs - with more and more hardware players adapting it (though still not deciding on the .mp4 or .aac ending, arrrrg!).
Which is actually good that they made it accessible "on demand" rather than force you to use it, or offer a 30day/30x render demo and then asks for 30 bucks (Wavelab times). Granted, nowadays this doesn't matter anymore. But certain studios still insist on "official codecs", even though time prove that third party CODECs are just as good.
In my case, I am using the tool LameXP, with customized settings, which can also use the NeroAAC command line exe files to at least drop AAC LC/HE-AAC/HE-AAC v2. Though I do consider getting the Fraunhofer ProCodec Professional just for HD-AAC. Since that's the only one that is non locked to 44/16. I don't know how the NERO Audio Suite is currently, but that's the second tool I know of encoding HD-AAC. Then again, Sonnox/Fraunhofer looks so much more simple to use.
In the end... you don't have to use this CODEC, it's not even a selling point (unless HD-AAC with 48/24 is part of the suite - looking at you Steinberg, with Wavelab, filed that FR weeks ago!). It's an optional Add-On for Artist - else it's bundled it seems.
Other hosts however, force you on to something (like cloud communities) that you don't even need. Granted, there is no need to use it if you don't want to. But why bundle it in the first place, especially if it doesn't lower the overall price due to a collaboration?
It's all down to marketing I think. But it's good to have a choice.

I just checked the page - unfortunately there is no further info. If it's "Lame" as backend encoder (I don't use S1, so I can't confirm nor deny), then it's IMO a bit of a ripoff paying "that" codec, since it's (IIRC) Open Source.
It's a bit different however, if they created a specific shell for it, which would also mean a tight integration for the host. And that seems to be clearly the case. So instead of the CODEC, you pay for the actual host add-on (the shell).
Whether or not that is worth it 10EUR lies on a whole different ballpark. Again, plenty of alternatives out there.

For the ending, that probably is just a container format thing. The proper way, which may or may not be going on, is that .aac is the elementary stream format while .mp4 is aac wrapped in an mpeg4(14) containerCompyfox wrote:The thing is, that the official license (the actual technology) still resides with both Phillips and Fraunhofer. i.e. you can have a video stream with aac audio and h264 video wrapped in an asf container and it will be a .asf, not .mpeg4/.h264/mp4/avi/mkv etc

I kind of don't buy you need .mp3 as a format. If you are uploading to a service say... soundcloud. Soundcloud will automatically do re encoding. Uncompressed WMA is far superior to MP3 and while I wouldn't edit Og afterwards so is the lossless compression found in Og Vobis.
Bit depths beyond 44.1/16 are always supressed when uploading to a stream based server for both bandwidth and storage reasons.
re .h264 same holds for flv/swf however video hosts (youtube) often recompress

I don't think Lame is technically free to "distribute". I'm pretty sure apps that include the codec in their installer pay royalties.
The other thing about this particular case is importing. You can make mp3's all day in WMP or iTunes but neither of those will allow S1 Artist to import an mp3.

Still no working MIDI clock thenPresonus wrote:Changes that correct previous problems:

[Windows] Studio One window now always on top
[Mac OS X] Audio-device selection no longer lost after system reboot

[Mac OS X] First drag from the browser now working
[Fat Channel plug-in] Improved visibility of parameter values

What, you can't import .mp3 into S1?LawrenceF wrote:I don't think Lame is technically free to "distribute". I'm pretty sure apps that include the codec in their installer pay royalties.

As long as those bugs don't affect Compyfox everything is fine, they are showing Steinberg the middle finger.hibidy wrote:What I'm disappointed in is there are a few confirmed bugs that were not squashed.

In Producer and Professional you can, and now with this add-on you can too in Artist.rockstar_not wrote:What, you can't import .mp3 into S1?LawrenceF wrote:I don't think Lame is technically free to "distribute". I'm pretty sure apps that include the codec in their installer pay royalties.

Interesting: Just received an email from Steinberg that asked me to take part in a poll about
- distribution (download vs boxed)
- buying a complete version vs getting a basic one that can be extended via optional purcheses
- buying a license of a product vs subscribing to a product and paying a fee (the Adobe way)

Yeah, Steinberg should learn how to sell mp3 encoder licenses to the users of Cubase lower versions:Compyfox wrote:Hm... if this is pulled of right, this could definitely show Steinberg "the finger" in terms of how update a host, but still keep it customizable to your needs.
So even if you buy (for example) S1 Producer or Artist, you don't update because of the content, but you're staying with the main version. And if you want "custom enhancements" (read: tools), either get Professional "Extended" or get just the tool you need.
