I remember listening to a Singapore online radio some years ago, and they offered a channel with "Chinese Evergreens" - that was real Chinese music (with Chinese instruments!) from the 50ies, 60ies and 70ies. I loved it! But then I wanted to listen to it again a few years later, and they had removed the whole internet radio... :x

Sorry if they've been mentioned before, but by far the best Chinese band I heard and saw while I was living in Shanghai were Cold Fairyland. I saw them live about six or seven times. I got chills just listening to it now. I recommend grabbing their Seeds on the Ground album if you can find it.

I am from hong kong and some of my favorite singers includes endy chow, ellen loo, khalil fong, pakho chau, rubberband, but like you said, there is none traditional music elements, no one cares about that in hong kong lol. Songs from ivana wong, my little airport, kay tse, the pancakes are quite good too. Some of the lesser known eason chan songs are quite unique too.
If you are specifically looking for traditional elements, Jay Chou has some to offer

Thanks for mentioning Jay Chou, I'm listening to it now and he makes pretty good hiphop songs. I cannot hear many traditional elements but at least it's a bit better than all this Canto-pop stuff...

Well, for Hongkong I can understand that they don't like to "import" traditional Chinese elements in their music as they rather tend to be more "Western"-orientated than Chinese (at least that's my impression from Hongkong).

EDIT: He has even made a song that sounds like Bavarian beer garden music with yodeling... :o :help:
