Those Boomstars sound really really good especially the ones with the ARP2600 filters.

For real value you can't go wrong with the bass station 2,I would also recommend the moog little phatty

The bs2 though can do some awesome drum sounds especially bass drums,I honestly can't think of a better sounding, better value modern analog in its price range,I've tried them all and the bs pisses on the rest
live 11 / Arturia collection / many Softube plug ins / thats it

Arturia might suck with their software but the synthesizer they made is pretty decent !

I remember the guy behind Portis head mentioning that he really liked the sound of the MiniBrute and that is pretty big praise from a guy who owns vintage gear worth way way more.

The Korg MS-20 can do some pretty interesting sounds.

I personally love the filter on it and I think the patchbay is great when you decide to do a bit of sound design.

This is a pretty good sound demo of the MS-20 Mini.

Yes! Studio Electronics Boomstar series. These are some of the most complete mono synths out there. You get every feature you'd ever want in a mono synth bar patch memories. These can scream, can go lush and gentle, punch holes in the thickest dance club wall or make some crazy effects with ease, etc. I own the 5089 and this thing is way too much fun.

I exchanged my Slim Phatty for one (SEM)... definitely no regrets! ;)

MFB Microzwerg is good too for both bass & drums.

I love mine - it can do a decent kick and all sorts of fm sounding clangs (due to it's unison ring mod and polyphonic ring mod) as well as monophonic and polyphonic (3 note). Gritty and a bit noisy but has an awesome korg 700 esque filter.
Examples please! :)

I'm already saving for a Boomstar (the CS80 filter), and I'm a huge Studio Electronics fan (ATC-Xqfs owner), but I've found the Minibrute great for drum sounds and it just has a really interesting quirky little sound that can be aggressive, but also quite sweet if you ease back on the gain and Brute Factor™.

I've also done some nice blippy percussion sounds with my MoPho, and while it might be hard to program from it's face place (I wouldn't now, I've never done it) it's easy as pie to program with it's editor. I'm one of those guys who doesn't care about a real or virtual interface as long as it's a good interface.

The Slim Phatty I had was also a nice machine and good for some drum tones, but I sold it as a few things about it bugged me. I replaced it with a Sub Phatty and I love it. Haven't done drums with it yet, but I bet it can do some decent drum sounds.

I like the Bass Station II a lot. I think it's a very good "all rounder" synth. Lots of bang for the buck. Maybe not the most characterful of the machines we're talking about, but sits nicely in a mix. Good feeling keyboard.

I don't know what your budget is, but perhaps a Tempest might suit you. Drums obviously, but the best demo of it I ever heard was made using it for synth tones.

You should check out the Analog Four. Is great for creating drum sounds and has the bonus of having a 64 step sequencer built in ;-)

The Bass Station 2 is pretty good at drums too :)
