Clearly some advantages to the consumer. Mostly it's MIDI/USB - something not not super available on a vintage unless you do a more involved MIDI to key contacts mod, it's super compact and not as likely to fail like something 30-40 years old. Surely won't be expensive.

In Waldorf's favor, it could very well be all digital, any info? Might be an analog filter or ensemble (Berhinger proves you can still make an analog one cheap) but unless marketing research tells them it's a selling point I doubt it. I don't see any filter controls, most likely meaning the sounds is all digital.

If one looks at history, polysynths at first did not exist then they were pricey. There was a place for these to do pads, no question. I'd say Korg's Polysix and Roland's Juno 6/60 effectively killed the market with a real poly and sweet chorus to boot (saving the cost of 6 more DCOs/VCOs) and providing a range of polyphonic individually filtered and enveloped rather than paraphonic quasi synth sounds

Somewhat ironic, after 35 years hardware analog monosynths are abundant, analog polys are not other than DSI part hybrids, so yeah, there is probably a market for something that does old school pads for cheap, though I guess while it has at least as many controls as a string synth, that's not saying much. You can adjust it to an extent but when it comes down to things, it's like a preset pad, a solo layered and you either like the sounds in there or not.

This is indeed really cool. Looking forward to it. Waldorf has added details at their Facebook page (in german):

With a price of 279 € it looks like a no-brainer.

Not sure how far this is analog yet. Maybe the filter like in Rocket.

Will have a look (and listen...) next week at the Musikmesse.

BTW "Streichfett" is one of the coolest synth names so far. :)

Since when String Ensembles did not include a filter? Even if there are no filter controls this should be still necessary.

Ingo

so if it has no controls how does one use it?

Post

Expensive for such a limited unit.

Just had a look at the solina circuits. Those seem to contain multiple filters to create it's different sounds, even if there are no controls at the interface. There were no samples so somehow those sounds had to be created.

While a BBD Chorus is necessary for that "typical" ensembel sound the basic sound seems to be based on subtractive synthesis.

Yes - but I don't think Streichfett utilizes analog filters for its fully polyphonic string register section.

Post

also no mention of an analogue filter in the facebook page ingo posted, which would be a selling point? no?

I got no clue about if and where Steichfett has real analog parts. I am just guessing like others here...
Anyway as the other Waldorf units (Pulse 2, Rocket, 2-Pole) have real analog parts too i guess that it should be here too. Maybe an anlaog Chorus.

Would be nice... But it'd be best if Ensemble effect was analog... that's the key for string machine sounds.

I agree to that. Analog Phaser would be cool too... :)
