Agreed on Spacemaster (although it's only 'free' if you already own Reaktor), and a few other UL reverbs if you search the UL (can't think of the names of any off the top of my head).

Of course. I woke up at 4:30AM because I feel asleep with the heat turned off and a window open. I should know better than posting before I've had coffee on a bad nights sleep.

But, free notwithstanding, for ambient music, Reaktor is probably one of the best investments that you can make.

There's loads of good free reverbs out there. As you're doing ambient, which isn't exactly accurate room emulation or realistic sounding spaces, just experiment. Stack a few different reverbs, send them through each other, pan one hard left, a different one hard right and send them through a buss with a completely different reverb on it. I've found some really interesting combinations of reverbs on my ambient travels...

Good free reverbs:

Omniverb - kind of grainy sounding - lovely character and has modulation that can sound nice and thick.
Classic Reverb - again, on the grainy side but has a different character to omniverb.
Voxengo Old Skool Verb - A special reverb that sounds quite unique - quite 'dirty' but at the same time thick and metallic/shimmery (to my ears!)
Mverb and DX Reverb Lite by Anwida - both smoother than the aforementioned.
Hibiki from Freeverb3 - True stereo, can be made to sound very wide and create big sounding spaces. Has a kind of 'dark' character.

All of these are useful for ambient imo - experimentation is the key

One good piece of donationware that I don't see mentioned often is

the stereo image controls are a nice feature.

Surprised to see no mention of TAL's reverbs; I seem to use TAL-Reverb-II the
most out of the three.

I loved Gregjazz's Cinematic Reverb (especially for unsubtle ambient bigness), but ended up having too many stability issues- since OP is on XP, this may not be a problem.

For other "more ambient-dedicated and less general-use" reverbs there's
xoxos' Waterverb and HomeGrownSound's SoundScaper II.

Also agree heartily with previous replies- SIR, Ambience, GlaceVerb, Reflex Free, Abstract Chamber, Freeverb(s), LiscVerb, etc. are all quite good with their own strengths.

Swiss-army-reverb Space 360 (when behaving) is amazing (especially automated).

If more links are needed for what I've mentioned other than Mo'Verb, I'll edit the post to include them, but they're not hard to find.

Can't help but mention a little trick: if looking to add some retro flavor, try adding
a little spring reverb before your main plate/hall/etc. reverb; just don't forget
all the freeware spring reverbs are mono, so some routing twidgetry might be required if preserving the stereo image prior to the reverb(s) is wanted..

I like it but I have had problems with storing the presents in Reaper, if I use it in a project and re-open the project it's back to the default patch." <-- I had the same issue in FL Studio back in the day constantly which made me ditch it sadly enough.

So perhaps not a worthy recommendation for this thread and for all-around use, but the sound it gave I will never forget, probably the best I have ever heard coming out of a plugin freeware or not.
