What can Geist do what I can't do...

...manually?
Because Geist is to offered for 50 dollars at MusiciansFriend and I'm tempted to buy it but I'm pretty poor at the moment.
So far I made my beats always manually with several tracks in a drum group, or I used loops and sliced them, so I don't know if I really need it. To slice loops, I've always used Slicex by Imageline.
Could someone give me a few examples what Geist is capable of?

to germany it's 74eur (shipping+handling+tax)

The shipping costs + tax is nearly as much as the price of the offer?

Didn't she help out with receiving packages in the US, and then E-mail the serial to the cutomer abroad?

Geist is one of the few things I've bought and completely don't know what to do with.
I've opened it, looked around, couldn't get anywhere with it. I don't think I even got a sound out of it. I haven't checked the manual yet but should I need to, to make a test patch?! I guess I just really suck at Geist.

Tricky - it's pretty powerful software that, as Sendy mentions above, takes a lot of practice to use.
It sounds like you're comfortable creating drum grooves as you have been, I like it as it's fast, flexible and within one instance of Geist, you can layer different beats. For instance: Grid out a simple kick and snare pattern on one layer(Giest calls them "engines"), then write high-hats and claps on another engine, cymbal rides and crashes on another and mix to taste. You can then trigger or mute each engine within the track for your arrangement. Lately, I'm running two instances of Geist at the same time with one track of Geist instrument going into CamelPhat, the other "clean".
best of luck !

it is definitely not the most intuitive. i bought it before xmas, and just before my 'puter died. i have yet to get set up on my new laptop, but i remember that the official geist videos were actually pretty good, and that the manual is excellentSendy wrote:Geist is one of the few things I've bought and completely don't know what to do with.

i am not sure that geist offers much that is groundbreaking, but it seems to combine so many tricks into the package that will really enhance certain workflows, for me, just the fact that it actually samples clears enough of a workflow headache as to allow much more open and easier experimentation
it seems to be really deep

well, they released tremor then so i think many thought that tremor is somehow the competitor of geist when in reality geist is a sampler and tremor a drumsynth.

I have demoed Punch, Tremor, BFD, Superior Drummer 2.0, Microtonic, Spark EDM and Drumaxx.
Geist and Punch were my favorites. I have a large acoustic library already, so I wanted a sampler. I think punch has better FX, but you can do so much more with patterns and automation control with Geist. Check out some videos, including this one.

Here is a quick video I made of some of the cool note creation tools in Geist
http://draigathar.org/stuff/geist-notes.mov
You can create patterns super fast (24 per engine) and just drag the pattern into a track, done.
Geist is also a real sampler. meaning... It actually samples! It is so fast and fun for sampling ones own stuff. It has transient detection so you can record a series of hits, each as their own sample and then auto distribute them to the pads. I do this with my synths. I used to only play the synth, but in Geist it is so easy to create a custom kit that it totally changed my workflow.
You can easily do round robin on samples, layers splits etc... the included effects are excellent.
There are 8 engines so all sorts of complex rhythms are possible. There is a song mode to chain together patterns (I usually just use my host for that by dragging the patterns to tracks) and there is also a scene mode (something like Live's session view)
For the price you are looking at, it is worth it just for the piano roll and pattern creation!
And IMO, it is worth the full price for the sampling alone.

What makes me pretty sad is that all interesting offers are from the United States, and many of them ask for quite high shipping costs just to send a DVD case and a serial. Why isn't there something like MusiciansFriend or JRRShop or AudioDeluxe or Time & Space in Germany? Is whole Germany controlled by Thomann?

Usually it costs more to buy from a dealer than directly from the dev.Tricky-Loops wrote:Why isn't there something like MusiciansFriend or JRRShop or AudioDeluxe or Time & Space in Germany? Is whole Germany controlled by Thomann?
Those living in Berlin, can't they go and knock on the door of either Nat Inst or u-he, and beg, borrow or "steal" freebies?
Why don't I live in Berlin
